351w heads(C9/D0) on a 289/302

I know past tech questions about the use of intake manifold gasket on 289/302’s with these cylinder heads.

The answer I normally see is to use the 351w gasket for 69/70’s.

I believe I used the same on my build back in the early 90’s.

The heads on a 69/70 351w have the 16 bolt intake.
The 16 bolt intakes are the only ones that truly matter.l when it comes to the gasket required.

The way I see it, even if you use the specified 16 bolt intake gasket with a 289/302 intake manifold…what is the “dog leg” going to seal against.

One of the things I noticed is the weep hole cutout near the dog legs.
This reduces the amount of gasket for sealing around the water passage.

Am I looking at this all wrong?
I did this 30 years ago and trying to evaluate the “common answer” given.

Was there a 288/302 intake manifold that had provision to use the 4 additional bolts?

Re: 351w heads(C9/D0) on a 289/302

The only thing to watch for is if installing a 69-70 INTAKE MANIFOLD on later 351w HEADS that did not have the extra bolts through the water passages. Doing so results in a water leak through the intake bolt holes. In that case, you must drill/tap the unused bolt holes in the intake for a pipe thread plug, solving the issue.

Installing 351w heads on a 289,5.0 or 302 requires use of a normal 289, 302, 5.0 intake gasket no matter what year the 351w heads are. But, 5.0 intake gaskets have a larger water port opening, so be careful. I usually try to get 289 gaskets because they have smaller port opening and thus more sealing area.

In any case, just make sure yiu test fit the gaskets on the head and the intake prior to assembly to be sure there is sufficient gasket material around the port to provide proper sealing area.

You only need the 1969-70 dogleg 351w gaskets when using 69-70 intake manifold on a 69-70 351 windsor head.

I think the confusion arises because the FelPro 1250 gasket is a good, popular intake gasket for use on 351 engines. That gasket has the dogleg built in, but can be cut out for engines not requiring it, so it works on pretty much anything.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

About 24” of snow with more expected.
Yard and driveway were cleared this afternoon.
This is from the CR-V…had to get hardware for snowblower.
Visibility is zero at times.

Even stopped to help a gentleman and son get plow truck dug out so it could get tugged back onto the road.
Nothing but ice and hard packed snow on roads here.

Safe travels guys and gals.

Thanks for additional tips Steve.
Didn’t realize the water passage differences.
