Re: 1968 fastback mustang hooker super comp

I would avoid hooker super comps. Also avoid hedmann with the # 7 and 8 tubes that come upward. Those are really difficult to work around.  Hooker supers are notorious for fitment issues.

JBA makes a nice fitting header. You will pay more but worth the price.

Or the old fallback. Repop HIPO manifolds...if they will fit.

I have the JBA shorty headers on my 351W in my 68. Great fit and easy to install, but I did have to trim some metal off a small protrusion on the block to get the front pipe on the driver’s side to fit. (See picture)
I don't have the R&P steering though. Not sure about the fitment on that mod.

Re: 1968 fastback mustang hooker super comp

I would avoid long tubes of any kind on these cars.  Ground clearance is a noted issue, and I'll add that long tubes make more power on the top end, but tend to have a flat spot in the midrange where you actually use the car on the street.  I think JBAs would be fine your your application.  They fit mine fine except the LH header hit the steering box and had to be modified, but with a R&P that shouldn't be an issue.

I'll add that a couple guys here run FPA headers and speak very, very highly of them as well.

While I have long tube headers on my 65 w/351W, ground clearance is a concern.  If had to do it over, I’d go with a short tube version.

Re: 1968 fastback mustang hooker super comp

I have hedman shorties on my 351/'66.  They fit just fine and clear everything with no grinding. They have been on for around 25 years.  Of course, I have r&p steering, but the 66 is narrower and I think Hedman uses the same header for each year.

I agree with Señor Steve. Back circa Y2K I bought the cheapy Hedman Hedders with goofy #7 & 8 tubes. Butt, anything is possible with the right tools. I only have about a brazillion hours in them, and a new tig welder. So I got that going for me... which is nice. Don't be a Bob.

Re: 1968 fastback mustang hooker super comp

Next question is what transmission?
Cable clutch?

JBA makes shorty headers for both.
