Gas tank to trunk seal?

Gotta have new gas tank so what do I use to seal the tank flange to trunk floor on my 65 FB? New tank fits good. Grand son removed old one so I do not know what was in there.

Re: Gas tank to trunk seal?

I used 3M strip caulk from O’rielly auto parts.

Re: Gas tank to trunk seal?

I have used seam seal but the last time, 2014, I used the 3M caulk strips.

Re: Gas tank to trunk seal?

I’d use the 3M caulk strips, of a RTV product.
The 64-66 Mustang “Body Assembly Manual” offers two sealing methods.
First -  prior to tank installation; apply a ¼” bead of sealer around the perimeter of the opening.
Second – pour, and spread with a brush, seal sealer over the joint of the floor pan and fuel tank, covering the attaching screws.
For me, I’d use the first method.

Re: Gas tank to trunk seal?

Strip caulk. You might not believe this, but I would NOT recommend RTV on this joint.  If you did it properly, you would likely never get that tank back out.

A non-hardening rope sealer works quite well. I would attempt to make a 100% seal, though to avoid having moisture get in the joint and cause corrosion.
