A few months ago I brought up converting my 67 coupe former 6cyl. now 289 to 5 lug...I went on to mention that someone had put a 8.8 rearend in the car but it was still 4 lug...I was then told that I could use 2 left side axles from a ranger (5 lug) to swap out my existing 4 lug axles...Did I understand that correctly? Is it a swap and can I also swap out all the brake components as well? Could it be that seemingly simple or did I miss something??Also, are explorer 8.8 rearends the same as a ranger? I have a donor 93 2 wheel drive explorer or are there specific years and/or models that I must use? Is there a difference in pinion location from a ranger 8.8 and a fox body 8.8 that makes the axles the same length or have I just totally got it wrong....Are there any ways to tell if I have a fox body 8.8 in my car and not a ranger/explorer unit....AND if this works and I go with the 94ish cobra front disc/5 lug conversion will I end up with the same size lug pattern front and rear..........I'm so confused

I can't answer most of your questions, but I believe the lug spacing for the ranger was 5x4.5, which is the same as the early mustangs. As far as swapping the front spindles to 5 lug I would probably go this route and get 5 lugs and disk brakes all at once. --->

I have the mustang 8.8 from an 86 GT in my 66. Yes, the axel swap is pretty straight forward. I can't remember exactly what year ranger I used, but I used one ranger axel and one aerostar axle. The reason for this was that I wanted to keep the axles on the same side that they had been driven for thousands of miles. The brakes would likely work but, I chose to use cobra disc conversion from "North race cars" you can google the company. The ranger brakes are drum and kind of small. It's similar to the MS swap but for the 8.8 axle. I believe that the explorer axles are a 31 spline count. The explorer center section is offset and the fox is centered. I found the info for this swap, I think it was CarCraft magazine online. There was also a source in the article for the spring perches to fit the 8.8 axle. It's been a couple of years since I did the axle swap, but the info is on the web. Many people have done the 4 lug to 5 lug swaps on the fox mustangs.
Good luck!

Here is the CarCraft article that I referred to. This should answer many of your questions.
Good luck!

Try google for many of your questions. I fouind one Ranger site that shows that the Explorer axles are 31 spine and not 28 spline that would have come with the Ranger or Mustang. Good suggestion above on left and right axles and direction of rotation. So the Explorer swap will not work unless you also went for the carrier and now you are into a lot of work. See this site:

The front spindles on your 6 cylinder car are exactly same as the V8 5 lug spindles. They just changed the hubs. So, all you need are a pair of hubs and some disc brakes. Or you can swap spindles and all for something different.

The earlier Rangers had 28-spline axles. I'm just going on memory but I want to say Ranger axles up to about '92 were 28-splines, before 31-spline became standard.
