What function does a alternator serve other than charging the battery.
lets say it was not charging and you jump the battery off and crank it....as the battery dies would engine spark die too.
I have the petronix distributor with the Ignitor III and the Petronix Flame thhrower III coil and my builder had hooked my 1 wire 100 amp altnator up like the factor 3 wire and it was not charging and runs like crap. He called me and said your altnator is not charging .....I had forgot to tell him I had laid the 1 wire altnator in there off my wrecked car. My new car had a regular 3 wires set up so he was just swapping this one in not knowing it was any differnt so I am hoping when he rewires the it like it needs to be as a 1 wire it will work right......would that have made it run bad. I would figure it would not get much fire just running off the battery not much spark.

If the alternator is not charging, yes, the engine will run so long as the battery has enough power to fire the plugs. As the battery runs down the quality of the spark will get worse and worse because the coil is just a transformer, so power out is directly proportional to power in. I had this happen once years ago when I installed a new alternator and harness and didn't understand that there was a ground on the harness and connected that wire to the stator terminal, which caused it not to charge. I drove probably 30 miles before it died (on a back road in the dark of course).
My guess is it will be fine if he simply rectifies the way its connected.

I had a similar problem with the T-bird and pertronix ignition. Would not run below 2K RPM. It had a homemade gen to alt conversion. Found out the belt was slipping and not charging. Someone on here helped me find an alt bracket conversion kit and a hipo pully fixed that. Anyway it would run bad or not at all. I figured the electronic ignition needed voltage above a certain level to work properly, so that could add to the problem too. The other issue was, he wired the pertronix off the resister wire. Sometimes the car would start, as soon as the key went to run it would quit. I think you'll be good whit proper wiring.
