Versailles rear question

Somebody near me has one for sale and I've been wanting to convert to a 9in for a while on my 67, but I remember hearing some negative issues with the disc brakes on those and I was wondering can other disc brake systems be adapted on them.

Re: Versailles rear question

Any of the large bearing MustangSteve rear disc conversions will work on the Versailles rear end.

The versailles discs are about the worst I have ever seen.  They have alot of drag and add about 40 pounds over the MustangSteve cobra setup. Plus the parking brakes are impossible to make work correctly.

Also, the third member has a flange instead of a u-joint yoke that will have to be dealt with. And gear ratios are typically 2.50:1 or 2.75:1

The width is a little narrower than the 67-70, about 1”, so that is a plus. The spring perch width is the same as the Mustang.  Be aware the rear end as designed will sit at least 1/4” off center in a Mustang, but most Mustang rears do as well.

Re: Versailles rear question

I bought your cobra conversion for mine several years back and I've been trying to find an original small bearing 9inch
that it would fit on, but unable to find one around where I live.

Re: Versailles rear question

I have one for a 65-66.  2” narrower than the 67-70, which works out perfect when installing wider tires/wheels.  Small bearing 28 spline

Re: Versailles rear question

Ya ever think about...........
gett'in an 8.8 narrow it down and have a stronger....cheaper...lighter..rear end that comes with trac-loc and
'many' different gear ratios !?
AND I think most of the guyz have an EZ'er time making the disc brakes work.

Stronger in what way Mr Sally? I've not heard that claim before.

Re: Versailles rear question

Explorer disc brakes are less than desirable, with their heavier drum brake for parking on top of the discs.  But, you can make cobra fit them.  The rear end IS lighter and I bet you can even build an 8.8 that doesn’t make noise like a 9”
$300 or less should het you an 8.8 with 3.70 or 3.55 traction lock and disc brakes, but not the best disc brakes.
Just depends on what you want…

Re: Versailles rear question

Once again I will crow about the 8.8 in the Heap.  I got one from the local salvage yard with 3.73 Trk Loc for $25. Found another with 3.55 open in a bone yard for $200.  Read up and narrowed one housing, cleaned all the excess off of it, installed spring pads at the proper angle for the pinion.  Bought all new Explorer brake stuff, new bearings, seals, TL clutches, etc. and put it back together according to setup instructions.  All together I ended up with $750 in it and it is silent, no vibes, works great and is 1/2" narrower than the stock 8" with 3.55 Trak Loc.  IMO, it's a far better way to go.  The  Explorer parking brake can be a PITA but mine locks the car down in either direction.  Just took some messing around to get it all figured out.
Incidentally, if anyone wants, I made the tools to align things when you weld one back together and I will loan 'em.

Welp (thx RPM).....maybe equally as strong as........ meaning a  warmed-over SBF ain't gonna 'shell-it-out-either' !
Some guyz claim 500 HP shoot'in through one ain't kilt it. Least that's what the inner-net sez!  Who am I...
to argue with THAT ?!!
