Can the valve body from a 1974 C4 transmission be swapped into a 65-66 C4 to change it to a 1-2-3 shift or is there more to it than that?
Offline
Steve according to my tranny buddy it will not. Too many bolts. Only a 67-70 will work. FWIW.

Thanks, Glen. I found a 74 C-4 in Austin for $150, but have not agreed to buy it yet.

Thanks, Billy.
Maybe this 4r70w I bought a few years ago is the correct answer. I was thinking of using the c-4 just for simplicity. I have a T5 but not wanting to have to row any more.

I would go with the T5 and never look back ....I sent you a crossmember

If the C4 is good shape, run it.
That would keep it simple.

Speaking as one who changed from a C4 to a 4R70W - it is really nice to run down the freeway at 60 doing 1950 rpm vs almost 3000 rpm with the C4. (That is with a 3.25 rear end)

I ran with a 1975 C4 behind my 351W and never had a problem other than the gear ratio on final drive giving me almost 3000 rpm at 60 mph.

I doubt this convertible will see that much long trip use.

Ignorance is bliss, I still don’t have a tach-o-meter.
I drove the 289/C4/3.25’s for 8 years with no problems or complaints.
During the non snow covered road season, I drove the 65 to Wausau and Green Bay for monthly training.
I like the C4 for the simplicity and no special electronics required.
Besides, with all of tourists in Canyon Lake…you ain’t getting anywhere fast. 😁

3000 at 60 mph dont sound fun at all

I don't miss my C4 at all. 3.50 rear trying to run 80MPH on the highway had the engine screaming. But then , I don't really like automatics anyway. 3 out of 4 tagged vehicles I own are manual.

You could probably get a good AOD for not much more. They are a really easy swap with great highway manners.
It’s one of my favourite mods, maybe #1.

I am trying to swap Gaba my T5 setup from the 69 for his custom built AOD, but so far the timing is not working out.
I plan to start working on the 65 convertible in February 2024

Heck, swap some big gears in there. I ran 2.50s in 2017 to Florida with an FMX and enjoyed low rpm at speed. Wasn't bad off the line, but won't win too many drag races.

I get 2000 RPMs at 60 with my C4 and 2.80 but gears. And Im just under 3000 at 75 so Im happy.

1950 rpm@ 70 mph is what I get with an AOD, 3.25 gears and 225 60 R15 tires. On some long trips I’ve seen up to 24 calculated mpg per tank full on flat interstates.
I had long trips in mind when I put 3.25 gears in it.
