Hello all, My name is Dale and I am new here. First post. I have a 1966 mustang fastback I have slowly been working on.
I will be installing 13.2 disk on the front soon. tracking shows I will get my rotors and calipers today. I want to look at them before ordering the mounting brackets. I was not really ready to buy my wheels yet but when I install the new brakes , I will need the 17 inch wheels on the front to roll it around. Now for the wheels, I have a few questions and want to get an opinion.
What rims would you go with? I am looking at black torque thrust m's, polished/chrome torque thrust m's , or polished torque thrust 2's. My car is 2011 grabber blue with gloss black Shelby stripes. I know the polished rims would look good, but I think the black rims have the potential to look even better, black spokes matching with the Shelby stripes. Just not sure about the black.
What wheel size? I used the search finction for this and am still not sure. MCStang had 17x8 rims anad 245/45/17 all the way around with both fender lips rolled. I dont really want to roll the lips. Based on this would a 17x7 with 4 inch back space work for the front. I would rather have 4.5 backspace but those are not standard in the wheels I am looking at. If 17x7 would work , what is the max. tire size? To complicate things , if using torque thrust 2's I would need a spacer to clear, pushing the wheel further outbound.
For the rear, 17x8 with 4.5 backspace is what is available in the m's and the 2's have 4.81. I like the backspacing of the 2's better for the rear, but I like the backspacing of the m's better for the front(no spacer required). What is the max size tire with 17x8 with 4.5 backspacing.
I know this is alot for my first post, but I like to jump right in. Any help greatly appreciated

Howdy Dale!
TT M's is Prolly a good choice, though I prefer the TTII's. MS has the M's on his 2+2, so it'll be asy to see what they'll look like on the car.
On the black vs chrome or polished. If your younger than 43 the black rims is prolly your choice. Being an olephart, I still like shiny things, Polished over chrome.
17x7 on the front and usually 17x8 on the rear. MS has 245/45/17's all way round on his I prefer a bit of stagger so 235-45's on front and may be 255/45's on the rear.

I agree with the polished over chrome. That said, the chrome m's are probably out. So what do you all think about a 17x7 with 4" backspace and a 3/8 inch spacer for the front. What size tire could I run with that if it will work at all? Still not ruling out the black. thanks again TUBO.

I am tending to get more conservative on tire sizes, having a car that never rubs or causes problems due to stuffing a big tire in there. I realize some want that situation, and I was there once, but am no more.
For the front, a 17x7(4.25" to 4.375"BS) with a 235x45R17 tire works perfect, as long as your car is not sitting up real high. Most cars are lowered now, and the 234x45 fits great with no problems.
The cars I have seen with the M wheels usually have undesireable clearance in front. My wheels are not M's, they are original Bullitt wheels narrowed to 7" in front, with BS of 4.7". I would rather it be 4.375 for better scrub radius. I have 245x45 tires in back.
For a perfect world, if I was building up another 66 right now, I would have all four corners with 17x7 4.25" BS and 235x45 tires. This would provide perfect fit, and the car could be lowered any amount you want without any rub issues.
By the way... WELCOME to FYI !!! I'm glad you found us, and hope we can be of help for a long time. Are you anywhere near Nashville? The annual MustangSteve BASH is Sept 28.

Thanks Steve. That makes it clear what I need, but what I have been able to find is 17x7 with 4 inch backspace. That is without a custom wheel. I would be willing to go smaller on the front tires if that would make them fit. For instance would a 17x7, 4' backspace work with a 225/45 or 215/45 with or without a 3/8 inch spacer( in the case of torque thrust 2's).

You probably will not have any trouble with 4". I used to have 15x7 with 4" backspacing up front with 215x60R15 tires. They did not rub except extreme cornering/hitting a bump at same time. The 17 tire does not bulge out as much from the rim as the 15" did. But, I have not tried the 17 with 4". Maybe someone else on here has done that and will comment. Nothing better than direct experience.
You are going to own the wheels and any problems they create for a very long time. It might be best to find some with best possible fit, rather than a RIGHT NOW fit.

I just put Ridler 675 polished 17x7s on my car, which have 4" backspacing. I had no desire to mess with rolling fenders or worrying about clearances so I put some hankook 225x45x17s on all four corners with directional tread. Since they're the same size I can still rotate 'em.
Tires came from tire rack for ~ $70 / tire after an $80 rebate and the wheels were only ~140 /each.
Very happy with the result, since I like shiny wheels.

Hey, soonerfan... Could you post some pics of your car with those wheels?

Just installed a 9" rear from Quick Performance with disc brakes and did the wheels at the same time, since I switched to 5 lugs.
Car is still a 6 and has original rear springs, but the front has 620 coils and the arning drop in anticipation of swappin to an 8 down the road. I don't really have any under car shots yet.

Thanks Sooner. Well after much searching I did find some 17x7 with 4.25 backspace. Rocket racing makes several models. Has anybody seen these on a mustang? They look pretty cool and I saw an episode of Gas Monkey where they used them and they looked cool. Big drawback is they are $250 - 260 a wheel. Do you know if they have the issues of the torque thrust 2's? cragar also makes their oldscool polished wheel on this size, thoughts?
Sooner , where did you buy your rims? Got any pics.

I bought my wheels from wheelsforless.com. They were about $135 a wheel I think and free shipping if I remember correctly. I bought them at the beginning of July. I just looked at the site and don't see any polished ones, but they do have the chrome and silver painted ones on their site currently, at least as of tonight.
Here is a closeup of the actual wheel & tire on the front.

Those look real nice Sooner. Do you have disk in the front, if so what type? If you don't , I wonder if they would have the same clearance issues as the TT 2's with the 13.2 calipers?

I have Granada discs up front. I can't say how much room there would be with bigger discs. I did the Granadas up front a few years ago, because I didn't want to upgrade the wheel size at that time. I waited to upgrade the wheel size till I did the rear this year. Now that I have 17's all the way around I guess I could put bigger discs up front some day in the future if I ever feel like I'm not stopping quick enough or I can't solve the rattle issue that Mustang Steve has a remedy for in his FAQs.
My new rear came with Explorer style discs (from YukonGear), so now I have discs all the way around.
Given that I was buying a rear and I'm still running the original paint, I didn't want to put all my $$ into the wheels & tires. These wheels & tires were about 1k total. Most places I searched I couldn't find anything comparable for less than 1200 - 1300.

Welcome to the forum!!
tire rack and another couple site have a tool where you can see what wheels look like on your car. If you go to TireRack and find the wheel your looking for then most of them have a lnik to see what it looks like on the car

@Terry
Thx for the welcome. I've been a long time reader, just never had much to say that hadn't already been said by someone else.
I've heard of Vandalia, but never done anything but drive past on the interstate. I'm out near Six Flags, so we don't make it to you're side of the river very often, but we did just go to the drive-in in Belleville a few weeks ago.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
