Sharing this for laughs and to always look for the simple things first.
Been chasing a knocking sound that kept me from taking my 66 to the Bash this year (I swear that was it!)
Couldn’t pin point what it was exactly, shared with MS via phone, got under the car, literally everything. 100% coming from the passengers side. Had previously replaced all front suspension so I started working backwards from everything I had changed out. I suspected sway bar since there was signs of sway bar/frame contact. Replaced it, still knocking. Walked away from it for a week- came back- checked the lug nuts…..It was the Godforsaken lug nuts…. THE LUG NUTS!!!
The kind that aren’t one piece and have a sleeve on them. 3 of the 5 were essentially just hand tight and turning the sleeve when using the impact wrench and never fully tightening.
Am I that out of shape in working on my car? At this rate I’m gonna have to take a drive to Canyon Lake every weekend and let MS get me properly in shape again! Like the good o’l Ovilla, high school days when I learned some valuable lessons, especially the pain that alcohol pads make you experience on a fully open wound(Thanks Steve😭)
Anyways, chase the simple things first before tearing apart your entire car!

Ya, as soon as I found out my nuts were two piece, I bought new ones and trashed the two piece. There should be plenty here for BB to reply to.

Now that you say that, I had a similar experience years ago with those lug OEM 'two-piece' lug nuts. In my case they were cracked, and some were partially breaking off and you could see the tin cover coming off. So, I changed them out for solid ones. And then, some time later I had a flat tire and the OEM lug wrench didn't these solid lug nuts (my bad for not checking). Luckily, a guy parked near me lug wrench fit.

Good point, Bob. They do make 1/2” lug nuts with 3/4” wrench size. Original Ford nuts are 13/16”

MS - right, however this wasn't a Ford vehicle, and I never even thought about fitting the OEM lug wrench ... one of many mistakes I've made through the years!

Like I always say…
I didn’t learn all this -oh no I used a word I shouldn't have- doing it right the first time

The hard part is remembering your mistakes so they are not repeated 😱

Ain't that the damn truth.

Some smart guy said, "I learned more from mistakes than I did from successes". (Or something like that)

One old guy I worked with told me the guy that never made a mistake couldn’t have ever done anything .

Short story. At the time It was with first wife. Installed a set of unilug mag wheels on my car and the wife took off in it. If the truck driver hadnt stopped her for shotting sparks all over the road she may not of come home that night. All four wheels were loose as a goose. I had not torqed them.

After I mistakenly tripped an 850MW power plant off line, I had a company VP tell me the same thing. Of course, he quickly, and strongly, added “don’t do it again”.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
