Wheels and tires for a stock 65

So, I’ve been considering swapping out the 14” steel wheels, blackwall tires and stock hubcaps for something a bit dressier and in 15”. I see CJ Pony parts selling a set of Magnum 500 wheels for $569. They list two 15x7 and two 15x8 with some modifications needed for the rears to fit. What mods would those be? My 65 is stock with no suspension mods and all drum brakes. Why not all 7” wheels - or  all 8”? I’d also like to get tires with a white stripe. What about back spacing for a stock 65, and also ride height? What 15” wheel and tire combos have those of you with 65/66 cars used? Just a nice cruiser, not a racer.

Re: Wheels and tires for a stock 65

I would look at tire availability and pricing before wheels.  Sadly there just isn't much left in 15".  Most modern cars have 17" or larger wheels and have for some time.  There are specialty tire places like Coker, but they don't come cheap.  By going to 17s I was able to put rubber on my car for less than $600.

If its a stock car I would use either all 7" or all 8" wheels.  Then you can just use typical tire rotation.  The 8" may not fit the front due to hitting something at full lock.  Backspacing on these cars is critical.

On this site search “tire and wheel fitment guide”
There is a list of compatibility for tires and wheels, sorry  I don’t know how to post the link.

Thanks Rudi - I will check that out, but I was hoping someone who has the wheel/tire setup that I am looking for will post some info on what they have.

UO !!..UO !..ME !!!.......ME!!!.....call on ME!!!!
I have 15" on my 66.
215-65-15 all the way around. I had previously rolled the fender lips so no scrub.
NOW...I have Torque Thrust rims and I'm NOT sure of the width/BS.
I previously ran 225/60-15's with no issue. The front springs have been cut 1/2 coil I think...
No major scrubbing then except when trunk was loaded and cruis'in 70+ and hitting potholes in Okla.
Hope this helped a little......

Thanks Mike - I am finding that the P225/60/R15 in a narrow whitewall is scarcer than the proverbial hen's teeth. The 7" Magnum 500 has a 4.250 BS which is what I need butt............ I'm not looking to roll the fenders or mods like that - I was just hoping for a plug and play...

Re: Wheels and tires for a stock 65

15x7 with 4.25” backspacing and 215x60/15 will fit with no mods.
15x8 will not fit unless you like rubbing.

I have fitted a out every size wheel and tire combo imaginable n my 66.  I can tell you from my own personal experience what fits. Those fitment charts are not real world. Like Sal said:  “fits great but it rubs”  no further comment on that is necessary.

American Racing Torque Thrust 15x 7 has 3.75” backspacing and does not fit well. I would run them if they made it in the correct backspace.

I ran 225-60x15's on my '66 and they did not rub in the front.  I installed 1" lowering springs and had to downsize to 215's in the front only.  You need 4.25 b/s for the wheels to clear the hubs.  It will be worthwhile to measure the space available around the wheel well and anywhere else with your current wheels.  Then extrapolate what other tires will work.  Thinking out loud - maybe go to the wrecking yard and buy a Ford 15x7 wheel to use for trial fitting.

I will take your advice (and Mike (Sally) also and look into the 215/60/R15 size and if they come in white wall stripes. Thanks guys for the input.  -  One more question - would a 215/70/R15 fit also or would there be problems?

Re: Wheels and tires for a stock 65

I have American Torq-Thrust 15x7, 3.75" BS and Goodrich 225/60-15 tires.  I haven't had issues with the 225 size rubbing the front fenders but did roll these fender prior to installed the 225's.
While these 225's are still available in 15" diameter, if I were to make a change, I'd go with 17" wheels.

Re: Wheels and tires for a stock 65

The big advantage of a 17 vs 15 is the 17 has less sidewall bulge. That bulge is usually where the rub occurs.

We put TT-D 15x7 with 225-60/15 on the back of Jose’s 65 fastback. Those wheels have 3.75 backspace and typically cause issues. But, on his car, we installed a Maverick 8” rear end that is 1” narrower than the Mustang original rear. Having the extra 1/2” on each side made those wheels fit perfect. That said, the best backspacing for a 15x7 equates to 4.25”, which is, effectively, what his car has.

I think I am opting for a set of 15x7 with 4.25” backspace reproduction Shelby 1965 wheels for my 65 convertible. I will use 215x60/15 tires because they fit best with no potential for rubbing. Also, a lighter tire helps drivability and handling. Bigger on the street is not always better, but 99.9% of the people will argue with me on that statement. I am just applying fifty years of Mustang ownership knowledge and putting it to what I think is MY best use.

Your mileage may vary!

Re: Wheels and tires for a stock 65

Keep in mind a 65 tire is just a dab taller and narrower-er than the 60....and less$$ too. (They may have a thin WW available were-as the 60's may not).

Not to beat a dead horse, but I am still searching for the right combo of wheel, wheel backspacing, wheel width and tire size to install on my 65.
Everything is stock as far as brakes and suspension.
I currently have the original steel wheels and am running 205 70 R14 tires with no issues and also, non power drum brakes. No plans at the moment to do any brake mods.
I am looking at two options for wheels - the styled steel wheels with the red center caps in 14X7 with 4.25" backspacing with a 205 70 R14 skinny white wall tire   OR
the styled steel wheel with the red center caps in 15x7 with 4.00" backspacing with a 215 70 R15 skinny white wall tire.
Which combo would work best or would either one work without issues? This would be for a nice sunny day cruiser that I don't plan on driving hard.  - That's what my 68 is for.
I did try searching for a skinny white wall 15" tire in 215 60 R15 - but no joy - and no plans to up size to 17" wheels either, and don't want the raised white letting too - so the BF Goodrich Radial TA's are out.

What do you experts say? TIA

Re: Wheels and tires for a stock 65

I use Goodrich T/A's (225/60-15) with the raised letters mounted toward the inside.
Finding 14" and 15" tires is becoming an issue.
Try Coker Tire for 'vintage' tires, including white walls. .
