Duraspark vs. Pertronix

What are the opinions on this?  Does duraspark have any performance advantages over Pertronix?  I currently have Pertronix(got the car that way)

Re: Duraspark vs. Pertronix

Yes, there are advantages. Hotter spark, better idle, starts easier. That said, Pertronix does a good job.
I ran Pertronix for years, but was pleasantly surprised with Dura Spark ignition.....

Re: Duraspark vs. Pertronix

He forgot,  reliability, availabilty, cost.........

nothing wrong with Pertronix, per se, just try finding one in an autoparts store in BFE, Tennessee, on a Sunday afternoon drive.

We as a group are starting to get away from that aspect with all these shiny aftermarket parts.....

If multiple things can go wrong, the one that will go wrong will be the one that causes the most damage.

I installed my Pertronix in 2000.  Never had a problem.  Works better than points.  Haven't touched the dist since then. Around 50k miles.  Don't know about Duraspark.

Re: Duraspark vs. Pertronix

In one car perttonix burned out after a year,  in another, its been going strong since '95. I like the stealth aspect of the pertronix on a stock or near original car. However, the durability issue on these burning out and availability have to be considered.  The duraspark drawback is that you have to mount the ugly BLUE GROMMET BOX somewhere. But, they are available nearly everywhere, and you can source the parts and wiring at a junkyard cheaply. I got the reman. distrutor and a new blue grommet box from advance auto which carry a lifetime warranty.  It is really your preference.

Re: Duraspark vs. Pertronix

For you Pertronix guys. When you install Pertronix unit remove Points, Condenser and wire lead together and if Pertronix fails, in 10 minutes easy, you can reinstall the Points, Condenser and wire lead. Easy job, only need screwdriver and 3/8 wrench. Store in pertronix box in glove compartment.

I have a spare set of points in the trunk just in case.  I also kept the resistor line from the ignition switch.  Extra wire yes, but good insurance.  BTW:  I have heard of problems with the Pertronix II, but not with the original.  That problem should have been taken care of by now, but don't Quote me

I've been running the Pertronix II for the past 10 years... 0 issues.

Re: Duraspark vs. Pertronix

If I was trying to hide an improved igntion in a show car, I'd go with the Pertonix over points.  If I was looking for better performance than either, I'd go with the Dura Spark II.
