I had to get my old British Mini off the lift so I can do Mustang road trip stuff. After reinstalling the rear subframe assembly in the Mini and added hubs and wheels and rolled it off of the lift. Went to fire up the Mustang and it started shrieking at a high pitch. Somehow the alternator belt had rolled and was screaming across a piece of the engine. Pulled the belt in front of it and now have new items to buy. Getting multiple belts for the trip.
Plan is to get the oil changed and install a Cruise Control. Maybe look at some wiring I suspect is the voltage leak I have when parked.
Giggity.

Welcome to the Thrash!!!
Let me know what cruise control you use. I have been thinking about one.
I installed the new TKX yesterday. Now the new throwout bearing is rattling. Tomorrow I am installing a gas tank calibration gizmo. I put one on the 69 and it makes for very accurate gas gauge.

Why the rush to start so soon? You've got four and a half weeks before departure. Keep that 65 running and you won't have any voltage loss.

We hit the road October 8, and it is s long road!
I spent a month on the 69 getting it resdy for the trip. Now, due to the ill-fated CVF Wraptor serpentine system that has gone through three water pumps in 3,000 miles, that car is not deemed reliable enough to make the trip with a water pump intact.
The thrash on the 66 got a late start. The new TKX tranny and Centerforce clutch are in and both work exceptionally well. The tranny is real quiet.i changed out the heim joint strut rods for adjustable rods with stock type rubber bushings. Installed a new Holley and got the jetting set so it cruises st about 14.5:1 A/F ratio. I’m waiting on a new boot for the R&P to arrive, then change the oil and get an alignment and it will be ready. I did not realize how my previous back problems had caused so much deferred maintenance on the car. My back is fixed and now, hopefully, the 66 will cooperate and be good for a lot more miles. I already feel a mini-bash coming on in a few months.
Bako or bust!

THIS ^^^ is the one I have AND Bullet Bob too. ... It's as accurate as any factory unit I have used.
(BOY !!! they sure have gone up in price from 15 years ago !)

That is the one I have as well. I ordered a Ford dedicated turn stalk with cruise controls switches it screws into where the original Ford stalk was.

The new TKX transmission has an electric plug on the passenger side for electronic speedometer pickup. I wonder if that would hook right up to the cruise control eliminating the need for driveshaft magnetic pickup.

Bullet Bob used the VSS with his ....it eliminates the driveshaft-maggots..(jus hooks into the back of the speedo)

I didn`t expect to get wrapped up in the Bash Thrash this year. It`s been running real good. I shouldn’t have done a walk around. Two of the rear axel seals were leaking and I dont have the time to look at. The shop found all the bearings in the differential burning up. So Im glad they caught it. It’s supposed to be finished today.

Mike or Bob,
I bought the speed sensor doohickey to plug into my transmission. I did have to drill the hole bigger for the speed cable to plug into it. Appears to fit and possibly work.
When this is set up with the dip switch settings in the control box, does this put out a square ware or a sign wave?
Bob do you have your dip switch settings written down anywhere? I may need to see them.
These dip switch settings are not easy to figure out. Actually the whole manual is not written very comprehensively. I read aircraft wiring diagrams and repair Tech orders for my job every week, but this is a whole new level. They could do much better. I hope their online Tech support is good.

Ed, I put the VSS on my car and all i did was drill the hole with a 7/16 (I think) drill bit and it worked fine.
Speedo cable fit in and locked tight.

Dip ? You mean like.......Skoal, Brother ?! It come in a round not a square...
I managed to set mine up and YOU KNOW I don't know square wave from 'a-red-wave'...
I DID learn one thing after much head scratching.....I needed regular filament-type brake lights NOT LED-type. I don't think the LED bulbs gave enough resistance for the cruise controll to read soooo...it wouldn't work !
I have put dual bulbs in my tail light housings and just replaced one(on each side) with old fashion blubs.
I didn't have the turn signal stalk cruise option...I used the dual rocker switches that came with the kit. Worked really great !
Can't help with the square wave problem........sar-dee

IIRC the Ford AOD VSS has a 8000 square wave pulse per mile.
The Rostra has dip switches that can program the unit for 2000 - 38600 ppm.

Sorry Ed, I set my cruise up nearly 20 years ago and being on old Dip, I can hardly spell "switch" anymore. Butt, I think what Rudi says is right on. In fact, I don't recall changing the switches until I went from the original little rocker switch control to the turn signal stalk add-on from Rostra. My cruise is an old Audio Vox CS-100 vacuum servo unit and works great.
If you want to hide the servo, you can mount it in the right side end of the dash, next to the glove box, on a 65, 66. I think Sal did this and also, I think Steve Buzek did it on his 67. The cable is long enough to make a nice sweep to the firewall right behind the throttle arm. Only think you see under the hood is a little piece of ball-chain. Steve did mention, I think, that he could hear the electric servo "clicking". The vacuum one I have is silent. I know this because Jean doesn't complain. I wouldn't hear it if sounded like a cement mixer full of log chain.

I put 917-614 VSS on the transmission. From the wiring diagram that came with the cruise control, it appears that one of the legs is tied to ground. Does this seem correct? I have the unit installed, the wiring ran. I just need to finish connecting to brake wires and switched power. Then should be ready for a test ride. I took the hood off to have room to install.

My new TKX transmission has an extra electrical connection on the right side of the tranny for an electronic speedometer. Would that thing send the proper signal forvthe cruise control?
Offline
It should. I put this part in between the speedo cable and the trannie. It doesn't appeared powed so it must have some sort of a Hall Effect to generate the pulses needed for the Cruise Control.
Offline
Don't forget......my cruise WON'T engage with the rear tires jacked up off the ground....
Doubt urine will either.

Got all the wires connected and cable attached to the carb. Everything is where it needs to be. Took it out for the first drive last evening and nothing, Brought car back started doing power checks. Everything has power that needs power. Will recheck grounds. The instructions have a poorly written set of troubleshooting steps to go through. I have a few days to check everything again. I have read horror stories about the units failing straight out of the box and the company fights you ever step of the way before replacing it. I certainly hope this isn't the case for us.
More to come. Still have a rear axle seal and an oil change to do.

Incandescent bubz in the brake light system ? Might be a good place to start.....
