My 289 has edelbrock intake I'm gonna change to an edelbrock 600 carb. It has flow master super 44 mufflers. What kind of cam would be good in it

What carb is currently on it and what are you trying to achieve with a new cam. I am in the process of converting from a 2bbl to a 4bbl. I have a Weiand Street Warrior intake and a period correct Autolite 4100. I also installed a 2.25" dual exhaust system.
I ordered a camshaft from Delta Cams that equals what Ford would have installed with a factory 4bbl 289. Nothing radical as my compression is stock and I did not want to lose any bottom end.

The previous owner put on what I believe is an edelbrock performer intake and I dunno why but he put on a 800 cfm edelbrock carb I dunno why complete over kill. It also has stock exhaust manifolds and h pipe exhaust and flowmaster super 44s. I dunno if is has any top end work done or bottom end done. I want to gain some top end and bottom end I guess I was told to maybe get the edelbrock performer kit and do the cam and lifters all together

Something about like this is what I anitially was thinking. I dunno on if it would be a good one I just want a good running mustang pretty quick I won't be really racing it.

I am sure that that package is quite acceptable. Too bad, though, that you do not know about the engines innards. If the previous owner added all that oversized stuff on a stock engine, then that package should produce good results.

I wish I did know because he could've already put it in or some equivalent to it my car has 300 horse now

The while you are at it can kick in pretty hard with a cam change. It is unlikely that the stock valve springs will work with that cam so I would plan a spring change. To help the cam survive during break-in, which is crucial these days with modern oils, you could run the stock low-er pressure springs and then swap out with the correct springs for the cam after the break-in period. Spring changes with the heads on the engine are not too bad with the right compressor. Your gains will be limited by your heads and exhaust but it should run healthier. Biggest drawback when adding to a stock unknown engine is that you often find the next weakest link. You might also look at some of the "RV" cams that are available. They may provide some real torque gains that you can feel without stressing the rest of the engine.

Ok could you maybe suggest such a cam. I Hurd good things about a thumper cam. Now on crank what all should I do about swaping to a newer crank shaft

I'll do some searches for other cams and see what I can dig up. If you are getting into the crank I think you need to take a step back and design an engine package. I'd throw the cam in what you have, have some fun, and start building a 302 from the bottom up and right. When you have it together you can take your new cam with some new lifters and re-use it if it matches the rest of your engine design. That way you'll have a known engine that is built for the driving you intend to do. The 302 gives you a few more options for stroking but a stout 302 can be a lot of fun. If the 289 is original to the car you may not want to do something that could break it. What is the bellhousing bolt pattern for your block? Is it the early 289 five bolt? That might limit your options for an engine swap as you will also have to consider a bellhousing or transmission change as well. But, I am not sure how many Mustangs you have so perhaps the 289 car is not the 64-1/2.

OMG!...OMG!! NOT the Thumper cam! You really need some better heads....more compression....headers....alot of stuff.
IMHO..........first find out just what you have inside(pistons..are they stock...flat-tops.dished..)
The stock heads with a cam of any size is sorta like"trying to puke with a rope around your neck!"
You CAN put a healthy-er cam in it....but it will be a turd to drive.
I have dealt with Delta Cams also and they can give great advice on the phone. BUTT......Scott/Ken are gonna want to know whats in the engine now before they can reccommend anything.
They have great customer service and super prices BTW.

For a stockish (4bbl w/aluminum intake & duals)289, I have found a Comp Cams 260H to be very effective.

X2!
You are correct-omundo Tubo. We/I automatically -oh no I used a word I shouldn't have--u-me someone has the time/funds/knowledge to do a full on build up. It was a simple question......."what's a good cam to put in a stock 289".. Shoulda thought before I wrote.
I do know....with restrictive heads and std. CR.. a tighter LSA works better than than a longer one. Shoot for a 106-108 LSA and don't go crazy with the lift and duration(maybe a 220 duration)

I have always had good luck with Crane 260 grind, mild cam. Key/rule for fords, especially street drivers, ==SMALL CAM, BIG HEADS. If you have aftermarket heads or a stroker, then that formula changes.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
