I bought a March serpentine pulley kit for my 67 mustang with a 302 from a vendor at the Good Guys show last fall. I’m thinking about putting a clutch fan on it, so I’m looking for advice from those that went this route over electric fans. I plan to use an 85 mustang GT reverse rotation water pump, so maybe a clutch fan from the mid 80’s? I’m also keeping my timing cover, so I can use my mechanical fuel pump or do I need to switch to an 85 timing cover for the reverse rotation pump to line up correctly?

Do you have a part number for the kit? March has fairly good descriptions of parts requirements and what fits on its web site. Some will and some won't support a mechanical fuel pump based on the part number and the type of power steering pump that it supports.

"Late Model Mustang" (

I recently researched the timing cover issue. The one LMR sells as a reverse rotation cover for front sump cars is exactly the same configuration as far as water ports as a foxbody reverse rotation efi timing cover.
So, there is no reason to change timing covers.
Just be sure to plug the two unused threaded 5/16” holes in the old timing cover (or on a new one) so they do not leak water from the back of the water pump.
On the 56 F-100 I put together with a 5.0, I used a foxbody reverse rotation clutch fan with plastic fan.
On jose’s 65 where we installed a 5.0 with reverse rotation pump, we used a stainless steel reverse rotation 17” flex fan (no clutch)
Be sure your water pump gasket matches both the water pump ports AND the timing cover ports. There are some gaskets that do not match, but look like they do if not compared closely.

I have an early 90's Hayden reverse rotation fan clutch new in the box. I used it to mock up my setup and it was too long due to my thick radiator. I found a shorter duplicate using this -
Send me a message if you'd like the clutch. it's yours if you cover shipping.
For a project on a 1946 Ford I bought a Advance Auto Parts pump for a 93 GT. It has round ports so it will work on either a normal or reverse rotation timing cover.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
