The 2025 Bash in Hurst, Texas is about 1500 miles each way for me. About 20 years ago, I removed the air conditioning unit as I have put the top up about eight times on the convertible. I saved the a/c components and with some refurbishing and replacement of some components, could reinstall the unit.
Did any of you drive to the 2024 Bash without air conditioning? Anyone have any thoughts or comments?

I would think that trip would be unbearable without AC.

Texas in September, it'll still be HOT! Unfortunately we really don't have a Fall.

There's nothing like driving home from a Bash thru Baker CA with the temperature sign reading 105°. I then decided to install AC on my hot rod. Give the trip a shot without AC, it'll let you know if you need the comfort of AC.

I can remember a situation years ago when driving back to Canada from a MCA show in August, from Georgia.
The weather was in the high 90’s, humid as a rainforest with pouring down rain.
Of course we couldn’t roll down the windows and even with the cowl vents open and the defrost on the windshield interior was fogged up to the extent that my wife had to continually wipe it clear with a towel.
When we got home she said that was the last long distance trip she would go on without AC in the car.
The next day I ordered a CAA kit and it’s proved to be worth every penny.

Yep
What Rudi said. Having integrated defroster is worth its weight in gold, when you need it.
WYAIT, consider adding intermittent windshield wipers. That is one of the best mods I ever did on my 66.

The wiper delay mod is the one I really wanted but never got around to it.
Too late now☹️

I have a couple of non AC cars that are unbearable even just around town in the 100* summers. I rode with RPM to the 2023 Bash in New Braunfels. Can't really imagine doing it without. Sure, somehow I survived until I was about 25 in the same weather in cars without A/C, but I was a lot tougher and more resilient then.
100% yes on reviving your A/C system. Ol' RPM is a man of few words. Very few. Remember what he said on the mic at the 2024 Bash? Yeah. Me neither.
But his actions speak volumes. He spent a zillion hours and a fair bit of coin chasing down parts to use OEM bits in a non-A/C car. He fabricated the compressor mount and moved his accessories around to make way. And it was worth it.
Yours being an A/C car will be far simpler, much less hassle.

I was going to run my AC last September on one the hottest days of year. I hit the switch and there was nothing...LOL I figured out this winter when trouble shooting when I replaced my battery I forgot to connect of my many grounds hidden behind the battery box. Problem fixed.

That's the same a/c system I use - the 460 system. Four windows down at 60 mph.

Thanks for the responses. I have a lot of work to do on the car, am building a Model T, working on three vintage motorcycles and the Bash will roll up quickly, so I will do my best to re-install the a/c.

Keep us informed. My 65 vert has underdash ac. I will have to decide whether to go with a modern Sanden compressor and condenser with the original underdash, or go with Vintage Air so I get conditioned defrost.
Offline
IMHO the defrost feature is a given.
Offline
I tend to agree, Rudi, but the convertible will get very limited road trip miles, so the underdash would be simpler, plus it will make a lot colder air than a Vintage Air setup.

September in Texas with no AC will be miserable.
The 69 F250 I got from Pop had the add on under dash AC unit that used R12. That thing would freeze the balls off a pool table!!! It was not uncommon to run both the AC and defroster on a rainy day. It worked well enough.
The Mustang has the vintage air unit and the first thing it does on those rainy/muggy days is fog the windshield. It takes me way longer than it should to get it clear again. It could be due to operator error!!!
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
