Radiator with front mounted fan

The 289 engine runs a little too warm in 90-degree temps.  The 160-degree thermostat improved the situation somewhat. I am looking for a replacement 3 row radiator for my 1964 Falcon. I plan to remove the flex fan and shroud and install a radiator with a fan mounted on the front of the radiator. I saw this set up on a 1966 Caliente at a recent show in Wauconda, IL, but the owner was not to be found. The fan appeared to fit perfectly in front without any alteration of the radiator support opening. I understand that pushing cold air across a hot radiator provides more efficient cooling than blowing hot air from the radiator towards the engine. I will appreciate any thoughts on this age-old issue.

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

Pusher fans are almost always worse than pullers, I would definitely not install it that way.

I get it now. Puller it will be. Additional responses are unnecessary unless you want to make fun of me.

This site is great, nobody will make fun of you, but they will add their experience(s) which is invaluable!

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

I run a pusher fan on my 67’ Toyota.  Sometimes it is the only option when your engine bay is the size of a kitchen drawer.  Some fans are set up to be pushers or pullers.  I am running a VW Scirocco style fan made by Flex-A-Lite.  Never had issues overheating but the fan does run a lot in hot slow moving conditions.  Trippy thing was that Flex-A-Lite directs you to flip the fan blades over for pusher applications.  They want the leading edge of the blade to be the leading edge, for most efficient movement of air and least noise.

I agree to avoid it at all costs, but sometimes it is the only option.

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

1994 BMW 525 had a puller electric fan behind the radiator, and a pusher in front of the AC condenser.

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

Look into the v6 contour dual fan set up with a 24” rad, for all I have read it seems to be the best way to go for best electric fan installations.
After I installed a 331 my progression through fan installations went from electric pusher to electric puller and finally a fixed solid mounted 5 blade mechanical fan .
I have a 24” Champion aluminum rad with a custom shroud, a factory 17” 5 blade fan cut down to 15”
and a 180 degree thermostat .
With this set up my  temperatures have never gone over 185 under any circumstances.

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

That Contour radiator fits 24" wide radiators, not the standard size for a 65-66 Mustang or a Falcon.  They do work great on the 24", though.  If you are considering a new radiator, check into the fitment of a 24" in the Falcon.  It is a huge improvement.  It makes for 50% more cooling area vs a 16" radiator.  The 24" aluminum radiators go for $199 on ebay.

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

My 65 with a built bored .60 over 289 ran very hot especially in warm 80+.I still run the 180 stat.  I made a call to the guys at champion and they said my 2 core 1" tubes stock size champion rad  rad with AC would never cool. I went with there 24" 67-70 1" tube 2 core and there 11" Spal fans and now I dont see 195 with the AC at 65 MPH or even at idle. Best move I ever made. And with some minor mode the Optima Battery is still in stock place

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

moon4964 – When planning for a 3-row radiator, be sure to check the width of each row, and the overall width of the radiator to ensure it will fit with the electric fan, and not contact the water pump pulley.
As other posts have indicated, consider the 24” wide radiator, there was a previous post of this forum showing the details needed to be made for fitment.

Re: Radiator with front mounted fan

I would first advise you run at least a 180 degree t-stat.  160 is simply too cold.  If you are trying to stay ahead of it getting hot you are better off trying to find another solution.  Running an engine that cold messes with the fuel/air mixture, and requires carb settings that are not ideal, especially once it warms up.  You are also risking much faster wear, even at only 20 degrees less than the factory t-stat.  We worry so much about overheating that there's an unfounded tendency to believe its impossible to run and engine too cool.

Run one of the good puller fans and your issues will go away.  I run an old copper/brass 3 row with a SPAL single fan and it ran 205 in 100+ degree heat.  With a system pressure of say 13psi you don't need to worry about overheating until it hits 230.  Boil over is about 250 with a 50/50 water/antifreeze mix.
