Wheel refinishing -junkyard specials

Wheels have curbing, dings, and some salt corrosion.

I am going to have them bead blasted.

Any suggestions prior and after?

Re: Wheel refinishing -junkyard specials

There are places that refinish them.  They can repair curb rash, bead damage etc.  I would look for a local place that does it.  Around here there's Sports Car Tire.  Great work and reasonable prices.  Also much easier than having to have them blasted at one place, and coated, etc. at another.  I sourced front and rear wheels for my '89 GT from two different places and the color didn't match.  They refinished just the rear two rims and perfectly matched the front two.  I thought I'd have to get all 4 done.

Agree, there are several places locally here that repair wheels.  People I know who have used them have been pleased by the results and the cost.

Re: Wheel refinishing -junkyard specials

I have had several sets of wheels refinished. Pass on having them blasted. The refinisher will want to blast them in order to control quality, and honor the warranty for his finished product. I am ready to pull the trigger on having the factory wheels on my daily driver done. The clearcoat from 2013 is failing and I am getting corrosion and rim leaks. I need new tires and the wheel refinisher also has the best deal on tires and installation, so, one stop shopping!

Re: Wheel refinishing -junkyard specials

Another thought... a person can get creative.  You can have them painted/powdercoated in multiple colors.  Back when Jr. had an SN95 Mustang with the factory 5 spoke wheels, he had the inside barrel of the wheel done in a darker color so they wouldn't show brake dust, and the spokes a slightly different shade of gray than stock, which looked better on the Mineral Grey Metallic car.

Forgot to mention they are also chrome plated aluminum.
Figured I would experiment with these first.
One wheel is damaged on/at bead which looks repairable.
Previous owner took grinder to center cap and the blue paint.
These are pictures after quick cleaning at car wash.

Could you share details about your refinisher?
What is current pricing for refinishing?

Yeah, definitely don't waste money having them blasted by someone else, or doing it yourself first.  The issue with aluminum is that it creates an oxide layer in a couple of hours.  People claim aluminum doesn't take paint well, but its because they don't know how to paint it.  If you paint over the oxide layer the paint invariably peels.  If you blast it, then immediately get it primed with zinc chromate primer, and top coat over that the paint lats just fine, because the primer is actually bonded to the aluminum, not the oxide layer.  I learned this working on airplanes.  I've done a bunch of transmission cases like this, and even years later having the trans apart for work and running it through my parts washer the paint didn't get damaged.

So, the refinisher will definitely want to blast them so they can control the adhesion of the paint or powder coat.

Re: Wheel refinishing -junkyard specials

They sure look like saveable wheels to me Dan! You should be able to find a place around you to have all the work done, Unlike me where they have to ship everything out to the valley of Fresno CA.??? 100+ miles away for chromeing. The folks all have some kind of process to prep them, chemical  process maybe?. I'm sure they will look great  either P Coated or Chromed. To much chrome on your Patina colored car might stand out to much, maybe a grey spoke center might look a little more complementary for your car? Just my $ .02 cents

Re: Wheel refinishing -junkyard specials

Gray center with a polished rim always looked good on that style wheel.

Chicago Wheel Service, in Elk Grove Village, IL.  I would think there is someone closer to you.  Body shops have to have a more convenient source.  I plan on being Up North again this week and could transport 4 wheels without issue, if we met up. (I know they box & ship)  I was quoted $700 to restore the four 18" wheels on my 2013 Suburban, which included dismounting, mounting, balancing, valve stems, and TPS sensor R&I.  I had 2 sets of 16's redone for $500 per set without any tire work 1.5 yrs ago.

Feel free to text me if I can help.

Re: Wheel refinishing -junkyard specials

Thanks for the information Tim.

With the Thanksgiving winter storm and a couple of house projects, I may hold off on these wheels.
