Thread Locker for header bolts?

Is this used/necessary?

I think the answer may depend on a few things you left out.  Like, is it a liquid cooled engine you are talking about?  Is the cylinder head cast iron or aluminum?  Assuming you are talking about a cast iron SBF cylinder head, it is OK to use the BLUE Permatex thread locker. Be sure to read the instructions so you'll know how much to use and how long the drying time is!  I say that because that is the only one I am familiar with.  I would recommend against using the red - read the instruction and you will understand why.

I would not do that on headers.  Too much pain if you ever cannot get a bolt out.  Good quality bolts and lockwashers are key.  Just as important is an H-pipe or X-pipe in the system to keep the headers from rocking and crushing the gaskets.


Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Wrap the bolts with several wraps of Teflon tape, this provides enough resistance to keep the bolts from backing out without locking them in place.

Lock-tite really doesn't work well in high heat applications as it releases at about 900 degrees, I have seen headers glow red when under hard acceleration.


The amount of fun is directly proportionate to the damage done.

If that cylinder head gets to 900 degrees, the loc-tite is the least of his worries.

Along the same lines, I lost one of the centercaps off my TT2s.  I went to autozone and bought a tube of Green loctite as it was meant for small screws.  after I got home I read the instructions and it says the parts are to be heated to like 500 degrees to release the loctite.  REALLY  I'm gonna put my wheels in the oven to get the center caps off??  I chose Hoss' ides with the thread tape
In short choose wisely what you use loctite for and which version you use!!  read the instructions!!

My heart stopped for a second, when you said green loctite, as they make an industrial bearing seal loctite that is green that permanently welds stuff together.  I had to use that on a 9" truck rear that had tapered wet axle bearings that kept spitting out the bearing race....not after that.   I have always had good luck using good headers bolts with mr gasket thin lockwashers, a good gasket, like deadsoft aluminum or copper, or Percy's gasket, or the old school trick metal felpro exhaust gasket on head side and cheap paper gasket on header side, and a light coat / tiny amount of copper antisieze on the bolts.

After today I was begining to think.....blue locktite might be a good thang!
I "checked" mine and they were ALL loose! {hadn't checked'em in a WHILE}. The cars so noisey I really didn't notice any extra noise normally.
Gotta love a good old open end 7/16" wranch and smok'in hot valve covers.
Yeah.....lock washers when trying to get those aggreviting bolts started!! Maybe next time.
