Reminder: Tires Go Bad!

I have less than 8k miles on my tires.  They have plenty of tread.  However, I was reminded the hard way why tires don't last forever.  Even being garage kept, tires go through temperature cycling.  Tires deteriorate after 6 years regardless of mileage.   These tires were purchased new back in 2018 so they are past their lifespan.

I had a blow out going 70 mph and almost lost control of the whip.  Thankfully I made it onto the shoulder.  I ordered a new set to install this weekend.  Lesson learned folks!

Re: Reminder: Tires Go Bad!

I guess I should consider myself very lucky. I just replaced the tires on my 68. I was surprised to find that the tires that were on it, even though hardly worn, were 19 years old. Now all my vehicles have new or new within the last three  years on them. No more 19 year old tires for me!

Re: Reminder: Tires Go Bad!

Both front Radial T/A tires on my 65 looked new but were really old, like from 2013.  BOTH of them blew the tread off while sitting in the garage!

Anything I drive on gets replaced after they are five years old.

Re: Reminder: Tires Go Bad!

Blow outs at 70 are no fun at all in any car.

7 year old tires on the back of the car is what put me on the shoulder on the way to the mini bash!!! It came apart around the side wall. Less than 18k miles, garage kept with no signs of dry rot. The question from Mustang Steve I could answer was air pressure. I didn't check it before I left!! Quick pre-trip walk around registered good in my head!!!!
