So I managed to get everything back in the car Friday night. Drove 10 miles to the exhaust shop with the open shorties, that was fun
. After they hooked up my exhaust I noticed a significant vibration starting a little under 2K RPM. At a stop light I ran the motor up and it was still there. My first thought was flywheel. I put in a new flywheel and centerforce clutch when I put in the T5 and new rear end and I was concerned at the time. The new flywheel didn't have the weighted area I normally see on the 28 oz imbalanced. It was one of those drilled out style balances.
So I'm trying to find out if Summit sent me a 50oz flywheel by mistake. Here's a photo of the new one that's in the car (left) and the two year old one that came out (right). Any thoughts anyone?

The vibration from a 50 versus 28 is pretty significant mismatch. If it is strong around 2000 RPM and then drops off at higher engine speeds, it is quite possible that the exhaust shop managed to produce an exhaust sytem with a natural frequency of the pipes and supports right around 2000 RPM. This would be present whether you were driving or sitting at a light. Unbalance forces increase at a rate of the square of engine speed so the forces at 4000 RPM would be 4 times higher than at 2000 RPM. So, if the symptoms drop off at higher engine speeds, the problem is probably not unbalance - if they get worse as speed increases then unbalance can be a problem. You could drive a wooden wedge between the pipes and the transmission or cross member and see if the symptoms change. I have been working with another MS member off-line on a vibration problem and contacted my engine guy in Denver. He said that he has seen a fair number of pressure plates recently that were very poorly balanced (if at all) and in some cases the were drilled off-center and therefore eccentric on top of being out of balance. I always have my flywheel and pressure plate balanced as an assembly and match-marked. It is surprising in some cases how much weight is added or removed.

I did put in a new clutch with the new flywheel. 10.5" dual friction centerforce. I had the same setup on my 4 speed but with the old flywheel and a 10" clutch.
I could always bolt the old flywheel and clutch back in as a test but that's quite a bit of work. I had planned on putting together a 347 in the next few months anyway, I might just jump that plan up a bit.
It stinks that I can't enjoy it now that it's back together though!
I'll check the exhaust and RPM range vibration. Pretty sure it got worse as RPM increased.

A 50 oz flywheel should have a bigger weight than the one you took out. I had a similar problem with the 5.0 I built for my 66 Mustang. I had a bad vibration from about 1500 rpm on. It turned out that my flexplate, from Summit, was boxed wrong. I did not have my engine balanced when I built it. Big mistake. Took it all apart, replaced the crank bearings and had it balanced. Machine shop could not get it to balance with the new flexplate I sent them. Had a flexplate that came with my used engine core, 50 oz, sent it to them and it would balance with that one. Got another flexplate and now all it well. But it was a nightmare.
Since your flywheel has no weights, It might be for a neutral balance setup. Sounds like you need a 28 oz.

I think if you line up the crank bolt holes properly you'll find that the holes drilled in the outer diamter of the new flywheel are 180 degrees across from the weight on the old flywheels. Removal on one side or addition on the other accomplishes the same thing. The holes at a greater radius also helps since it is oz-in of unbalance. The greater the in, the smaller the oz. To use the new flywheel and pressure plate you could remove them and take old and new to a balance shop to have them matched. I would eliminate other sources of vibration or resonance before going to the trouble of yanking the transmission. Unfortunately a lot of rotating components are not bolt-on.

Be sure the exhaust is not hitting against something under the car, like the crossmember or the floor or anything else. If it is, that can make a really bad vibration. It it was flywheel imbalance, you would have felt it without the exhaust on just like you did with the system in place.
Whenever a muffler shop installs a custom system, you really need to inspect everything craefully. Apparently they do not know that hot exhaust pipes can melt a rear brake line, as I have seen numerous times where they disregard that fact and have the rubber hose right against the pipe. Ditto with the cheapo hangers some of them use. They do not let the system move and float and again, if a part of the system is hard against anything, the car will vibrate like the end of the world.
As for the flywheel, it doesn't look "right" to me but I am not 100% sure enough about that to tell you it is wrong. Just look at the holes and figure in your mind if the volume of steel removed from those six holes would roughly equal the volume of steel in that counterweight in the old flywheel. Just looking, I would say it is not enough. (It will be slightly less volume than the counterweight because it is positioned farther out from the center of the flywheel. The weight can be smaller the farther out it is and still have the same effect.) At least that tells me it is probably NOT a 50 ounce version. The question in my mind is if it is actually a zero balance flywheel that took that many holes to get it to zero.

That new flywheel did come from Summit. They assured me by part number that is the correct part. That's my main area of concern.
When I drove the car to the muffler shop I didn't notice a huge vibration but I was keeping the RPMs well under 2k due to the open headers. I made sure before they took it off the lift that everything was cleared. New tranny mount, E-brake bracket and lever, etc. This muffler shop has a great rep around town for doing good work.
I know the old removable weight flywheel and 10" centerforce clutch are fine with this motor. No vibration. At this point I pretty much have to start tearing stuff down no mater what, no it's not the end of the world. I might take both flywheels to a machine shop and have them checked. If the brand new one isn't 28 oz or balanced wrong, Summit is going to hear from me

Steve, I agree. It doesn't look right to me. I'm normally pretty good at spacial judgement and the material removed doesn't appear to be enough to create a 28 oz offset. But I'm not a pro, so I trusted the folks who sent it. I hate having to second guess people and make sure they send the correct stuff.

One comment on balancing engines/flywheels/harmonic balancers.
I always make sure the balancer knows to NOT do any balance work on the harmonic balancer or the flywheel. Everything should be done on crank and rods. That way if you ever have to change flywheels or balancers, you won't have to have the whole engine and flywheel rebalanced. One must assume that 28 ounce MEANS 28 ounce and not"close" for the above to be valid, but they should be interchangeable.
My 427 is a zero balance engine. I do not recall seeing any balancing holes at all on the flywheel. You would think if it 100% machined on a lathe, it should come out pretty close!

I just ran the car for about 10 minutes in neutral. The vibration seems worse right before 2k. It actually seems to smooth out closer to 4k. So it's probably not the flywheel. I think my headers are hitting the shock towers though. I need another 1" or so. I'm guessing since I had part of my TCP brace kit remove the towers sagged a bit over the months. I'll get it pushed out to stock and see if the clearance helps. Also I noticed that the t5 pro 5.0 shifter seems to be touching the tunnel under load. I can see the motor torque a bit when I rev, but no nearly as much as before. I'm hoping the combo of the headers and the t5 touching is transmitting that vibration. That's a hell of a lot easier to clear than yanking the tranny out again!
UPDATE: The guy that picked up the parts for me just delivered the bad news. He kept telling me it was a centerforce flywheel. But he dropped it off in a Summit box. The part number on the flywheel and box reference a 28oz. Turns out it IS a 50 oz flywheel that was put in a Summit box. Heh. So I have a nice unbalanced motor beating the crap out of my bearings

No biggie. It's a bit of a relief at least knowing what's wrong. I'm guessing with the late model bell housing and the T5 I cannot use my 157 tooth 28oz that's sitting on my bench eh? I don't think the starter will line up correctly. I'm rapidly getting a collection of flywheels. I bet they make nice clocks.

Sounds like you are getting closer. Even if the exhaust is not touching anything it can still act like a tuning fork at that engine speed. Keep hunting!

If you have a 157 tooth flywheel with 28 ounce balance laying around, you can certainly use it. You may have to use the early style manual tranny starter (5.0 uses automatic starter whether manual or auto) to reach the teeth correctly. The 5.0 bell positions the starter exactly the same as the original 289 bellhousing would have positioned it. Only the distance front-to-back for the starter to reach the ring gear is different.

Vince, i have a 91 bellhousing with a 92 t-5. I used a 157 tooth flywheel 28 oz. im running a 66 289. Cable clutch and used a 91 starter.

That's great news! I was going to compare the flywheel that's in there now (that we suspect is 50oz) to the one on my bench. Dimensions, tooth count, etc. I was also going to mark where the teeth reach on the back plate with a marker and compare with my old 28oz. I have a hunch it will work.
I am a little confused about the vibration though. I've experienced a poorly balanced flywheel before. A machine shop that shall remain nameless cut one at a less-than-zero angle for me about 10 years ago. That was an awful shake. This "feels" the same as this current issue but it's not as severe. The frequency of the vibration is absolutely tied to the RPM range. But wouldn't a 50oz flywheel be a huge imbalance? I would expect the motor to be oscillating like crazy.
I hope to get it all apart this evening. I wonder if there are any local places that can spin a flywheel for a balance check. I know O'reilly used to cut drums and discs years ago. Before I reassemble it would be nice to know that the one in there really IS 50oz or poorly drilled.

I just got the clutch and flywheel off last night. Before I put the T5 in I had about 1000 miles on a centerforce clutch/flywheel combo that was perfect. I still have those sitting on my bench so I compared them to what I just pulled out.
The clutch pressure plates are the same size, but the hole pattern and hole size on the flywheels are slightly different. I'm almost certain that's a 50z flywheel for a late model mustang.
The clutch discs are identical. I'll be using the almost brand new one
.
Aside from the bolt pattern and size, the flywheels are the same diameter and tooth count. I plan on putting in the older flywheel, older clutch plate and newer disc. So basically the only "new" things that will be installed are the T5, headers, rear end and drive shaft. If the vibration is still present at least I'll know it's not flywheel related now.

28 versus 50 is a huge difference and you mentioned above that it was bad at 1800 and got a little better above. It you had a 50/28 problem the vibration would have been very dramatic at idle and would have become severe at higher RPM's. Before you bolt everything up and then figure out that you got it wrong, take both flywheels and pressure plates to a balance shop and get both verified. You will save a lot of time and you may find that your flywheel is fine and your pressure plate needs a little tweak. It is a lot better to verify than to experiment.

look at the 28 and 50oz flywheels on fordracingparts and you'll see the one you have looks just like the 28oz pictured. the 50oz unit has more (9) balance holes drilled in it. They are like someone mentioned above, instead of adding weight to one side they took weight off the opposite side to accomplish the same goal.

I agree it could be the pressure plate or slightly unbalanced flywheel. The thing is, the newer plate won't even fit on my old flywheel, so I'd be wasting time/money on getting the new combo balanced and corrected.
The old flywheel and cluch plate were perfectly fine in this motor with my four speed and have less than 1k miles on them. They're the same size (10.5). I don't see any reason not to use those as "known good" base lines. And I don't see much benefit in getting the other combo to work

If I'm still getting vibration then it has to be exhaust or something else going on.

Update: I put the old 28oz flywheel and centerforce from my 4 speed back in this weekend. I started it today and the vibration is almost gone. I have a little bit of a shake at 2k rpm but as soon as I hit 2100 or so it's gone. I'm thinking that's probably where the headers are touching the shock towers. I tested this with the tranny in neutral an no drive shaft attached.
However. I found out that a clutch plate that's meant for a mechanical clutch has a different throw out height than a cable clutch. The cable is about 2 inches from reaching the fork now. The fork isn't bound up against the bell housing and it does have play, but it's way higher. I read a little about it on line last night and it appears that mechanical linkage clutches are designed that way. Joy!
So to recap, I have a good flywheel but can't use the matched clutch. I have a good late model clutch that works with the cable, but the flywheel it fits is unbalanced. Whew. I'm taking the bad flywheel to a machine shop this week with the clutch to see what they can do for me. While I'm waiting I plan on pushing out the shock towers back to stock for a little more header clearace, to see if that clears up that vibration. What a mess!

At least you're making progress! Take both sets of flywheels and pressure plates, etc. and have them balance the new to match the old - a good shop should be able to handle this. Have them check runout of the pressure plate when bolted to the new flywheel. My local engine guy has seen some new flywheels where the pressure plate bolt holes were eccentric with respect to the crank centerline. No matter how well you balance a flywheel, and eccetric pressure plate mounting will run bad. It is a shame, but it seems like these days you have to check any aftermarket part for fit and quality. I would ask them to balance the flywheel properly first and then have them balance with pressure plate - making corrections only on the pressure plate. That way you can replace the pressure plate in the future without worrying about unbalancing the flywheel. What type of tower bracing are you using?

I'm taking my 5.0 clutch and that drill balanced flywheel to the shop today. They're going to check the balance of the combo and flywheel individually.
That combo fit perfectly with the cable setup but yielded the vibration.
I'm hesitant to buy anything else until I get this narrowed down
. Those centerforce clutches aren't cheap and I'm getting a collection of them!
And I'm using the TCP brace kit. I had the second and third stage pieces removed for quite a while as I've been working/testing so I think I may have sagged a 1/2" or so. What was the tower to tower distance again? 33 1/2" or something?

Karma strikes in the oddest of places.
My mechanic friend that sold me the T5/clutch/flywheel felt bad that I couldn't use the flywheel so he ordered me another one through his local Ford racing contact. I picked it up yesterday at will call. It was supposed to be a billet steel replacement, part M-6375-A302B. 28oz balance, 157T, drilled for a late model clutch plate. They sell for about $250.
When I picked it up it felt a little light, but I was in a hurry and didn't really think about it. Then after work I opened the box:


It looks like a mix up or mislabeled box. That's the aluminum version of the same part. Maybe there's a silver lining in all these setbacks I've had.

My sentiments exactly. Billet steel has always been my choice and you can normally pick those up for $100-$200. The benefits of an aluminum flywheel on the street always seemed negligible compared to the price tag. I know a few guys that use them and they all like them after they get used to the rev difference. If nothing else it should be exciting the first week or so
