when you put my wife's expedition in drive, the transmission hestitates for about 2 seconds before starting to pull. Feels like it's slippping. As long as you stay in drive it shifts fine. If you go back to park or reverse and back to drive, it does the same thing. Doesn't matter if the tranny is warm or cold. I've changed the filter, but no improvement. I've been told that it sounds like the valve body gaskets could be bad causing the problem. I know it's hard to diagnose without driving the vehicle but would the valve body gaskets being bad cause a problem like this? Any other things to check? Thanks for you help.

How many miles?
Did the fluid look dark?
Did the fluid smell burnt?
Do you tow anything with this vehicle?
Have you ever changed the fluid and filter before?
Did you just replace the amount of fluid lost with the filter change or was all fluid exchanged?
Have you researched this on an Expedition Forum?

Josh, here are the answers to your questions. 220,000 miles, the fluid was dark but no burnt smell. It's towed a boat a few times, but probably not more than 400 miles total towing. I have never changed the fluid but I bought the car used. Not sure about previous owner. I replaced just the fluid lost. did not search an Expedition forum.

I don't know if this is the same problem that I had on my 2005 Expd. but, I thouht I'd share. I would describe my symptom as the same and also it would come in and out of OD while towing with occasional hard shifts. I didn't want to mess with it so I went to the dealer fully expecting a huge repair bill. The dealer tested the tranny, I believe it was a pressure test and they found a bad solenoid valve or check valve? They replaced the valve and serviced the tranny. Been working great since July. I can't find the receipt to tell you exactly what it was but I believe it was under 400 not sure though.

Have you checked a universal join off the drive line? Could be a bad universal that will do what your stating when they start to go bad. But yes your tranny could be bad or a transmission sensor could be the problem

Haven't checked the u joint. It wasn't making any noise so I didn't think to check that.

have you hooked up a scanner and checked for any fault codes?
keep in mind, the typical scanners at the parts stores won't read trans codes.
tranny shops can check codes and a lot of ford dealers will do it for free.
tranny codes will still be "P" fault codes, ie: P0731 is 1st gear shift issue; P0732 is second gear shift issue.
I'd consider checking for codes first before spending anymore $$ on it......process of elimination, then go from there.
