    My worst nightmare almost came true

    While working on the gauges of my 65, I noticed a puff of smoke then the glow of fire coming from out of the hole in the dash where the bezel goes! After several minutes of moving wires and burning my hands I was able to seperate the wires that were burning and got the fire stopped.  Fortunately only minor damage to a ground wire and the springy cover on my temperature gauge sensor wire were damaged.  I was just about to grab the fire extinguisher lying behind my seat!
    After clearing out the smoke and my pants I found the wire that was causing all the problems was off the back of the ignition switch, there was a red on and a yellow one just cutoff and hanging there.  the yellow one is supposed to go to the A/C unit.  Not sure what the red one shoul go to.  Either way they are both completely removed!!  WOW thank the Lord for that!!
    I forgot to mention that It was in the garage, on the lift, right next to two of my other vehicles and my friends model A!!! wheww!!!!

    That was close !  I thought you were going to say you let the smoke out of the AMP gauge!  That is smart of you to HAVE a fire extinguisher nearby.

    Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

    I started carrying a fire extinguisher in my car the day after I brought it home!  It was the first time it overheated and boiled the gas out of the carb all over that HOT engine!  right now it is in the rear drivers floorboard, i thought about mounting it in the trunk but not sure I wanna have to open the trunk to have to get to it!!

    That happened to a friend by the time he ran to grab an extinguisher the car was engulfed in flames

    My extinguisher is mounted right in front of the driver's seat.   And...having "been there" a time or two, I always  disconnect the negative batt cable when working where I might short something to ground.    Then I touch the  cable to the post briefly before claming it down to see if there is any heavy current pull which could be a short I caused when working.

    Very glad this wasn't worse, T.

    Hi,

    I don't want to hijack the post...but back in 2003 I had a 66 mustang and it caught on fire...it destroyed it...After that point I have always kept an extinguisher in my mustang.  That fire happened while I was driving down the freeway...I stopped the car...and got out...a few minutes later a cop showed up and called the fire department...it took 3 minutes for the car to be engulfed in flames...Fire dept got there in 5...no one could have saved it...but if I had an extinguisher...i would've stopped it...
