T5 Shifter Question

Ok  I bought this shifter and It has a bend in it.   So if I want to use my T Handle its going to be to far in the inside to the Driver.   If I put some protection around the shifter and put it in a vice could I bend it straight or would it ruin the shifter?   Its hard to find a reasonible priced shifter on ebay to cut off and used for a T5 transmission.

Re: T5 Shifter Question

Steve. That's the lever I have in my 66 but I have a ball knob on it. I could see how a T handle would hit your leg. Keep looking. I know hurst sells many levers in various bends and straight patterns. I think it would be hard to bend that lever in a vise.

Re: T5 Shifter Question

I just bought a shifter handle/stick for my car.  It is a Hurst replacement for a 67 Camaro that has the correct 7/8" spacing for a Tremec.  Not sure all T5's are the same as the TKO bolt spacing so measure first.  I studied the Hurst site, and and found a few parts that looked good but I found that usually Summit had better pictures and diminsions on the height, the layback, and the offset.  I ended up ordering from HurstShiftersOnline.com https://hurstshiftersonline.com/productcart/pc/viewcategories.asp  For some reason, they were substantially cheaper than Summit and other sites including those I found on Ebay.  They did not have the application info but carry all the part numbers.  When you find what you want dimensionally, there is often a round version as well as rectangular.  I went with round because of the boot I am using.  All that said, based on how my transmission sits, I think the one I got is an inch too tall but it's hard to tell without the interior in the car.  HurstShiftersOnline specializes in 4-speeds on the classics which is why they didn't know much about the Tremec variants.  I just went to the link above.  That is the size I got but in the round stick - This link shows the same part and the round version.  The round one is $55.  https://hurstshiftersonline.com/productcart/pc/showsearchresults.asp?pageStyle=H&resultCnt=10&keyword=5384106&submit.x=9&submit.y=16

Re: T5 Shifter Question

how far over does it need moved?  Are you using the stock shifter other than the new handle?   You could try bolting it on from the passenger side with a spacer in between the shifter and handle if it doesn't need moved too far.

Re: T5 Shifter Question

I have the same one in my 69 with a T5.  It nearly hit the steering wheel.  I cut off about 4" of the bottom and redrilled the two holes and that eliminated that unnecessary offset bend in the shifter that was causing the problem.  Works great now!

Re: T5 Shifter Question

I have the same shifter and tried the vice method to straighten it.   My vice is not big and I managed to get it a bit straighter and I also mounted it on the passenger side.    I have a ball knob but I don't see a problem if I had a T handle.

Re: T5 Shifter Question

Thanks Guys for all the information.   I did mount it on the passenger side and I do have a console so it does have to be a little bit longer.   Id say the height is perfect its just that darn bend in the middle.  I like the T handle for some reason.  Your right GPatrick those prices are a lot better.
Thanks Again and Have a Great Weekend!

Re: T5 Shifter Question

I tried my vice and didn't straighten out much.  So I used my 3500 pd vice...LOL.  I wrapped the handle with cloth and put cardboard on top and bottom and drove over it slowly with the mini van.  That made it a little straighter and no scratches.    I used some washers in between the handle and shifter to bring it out some.  Now its where I want it.

Re: T5 Shifter Question

I thought about making my own custom shift handle! Getting the thick stainless material won't be a problem.....just finding someplace that can cut it out for me is the problem.

Re: T5 Shifter Question

Weird. I have the same shift lever with a t handle and I haven't noticed any clearance issues, certainly nowhere my steering wheel. This is the only pic I have.
