    Timing chain and not starting question....

    Ok, I finally got my car back together.  I changed the timing chain.  I have a 66 mustang.  Anyway when I changed it, I made sure piston 1 was at TDC.  I verified this and felt the top of the cylinder in #1.  I also verified that the rotor was pointing at the wire for the #1 cylinder.  I lined up the timing marks and now it won't start??? It starts for a second and shuts down.  

    Do I have to adjust timing?? My previous timing chain had a lot of slack in it.  It was pretty loose...do I have to advance the timing a bit to get it running again because of it?? It would start with the old timing chain just fine.

    You may have to turn distributor a bit. You may have had the distributor adjusted out to compensate for the chain slack.

    YOu also may have disconnected something electrical at the solenoid that only provides spark during cranking and then stops providing spark when the key is released to the run position.

    SInce there was slack in my old timing chaing...should I advance it or retard it?? Right now I just want to get it started.  

    It stays started for a second and sometimes back fires...I am guessing advancing it???

    Recheck top dead center is on the compression stroke. You might be 180 degrees off. Recheck ignition wiring.
