No matter how much you learn about something there's always something new to jump up and bite you... and I, by no means have learned that much about these old Mustangs. Butt (TS&T) this one was totaly unexpected and expensive.
As some of you know, we are doing the final major push (I hope) on our 66 HT. Lots more mods, all the metal work and a very nice paint job and I'm trying to go the distance to make it really right.
To that end I found and a pair of OEM doors in Arizona and bought them (1300 mile round trip and $300 for the doors) Our doors had both been poorly "skinned" so it seemed like a good idea.
My body guy spend a number of hours making them both nearly perfect (dents in the texture can be a challenge) and yesterday we hung and aligned them along with the front fenders to check everything before paint.
The passenger door fit and looked perfect but when we hung the driver's door it had a bit more gap at the rocker than we liked. These cars were never perfect to I didn't get too excited.
Then I noticed that the crease at the bottom of the reveal, or recessed area, was much softer than in the passenger door. Also much softer than in the quater panel or the fender. Actually, it was radiused instead of creased.
This is an OEM door with the factory skin....anyway, at that point a decision had to be made so I decided to take a look at a couple of other doors I have at home and discovered that one of my doors...from a 65 GT had the sharp crease like my right door. The other left door I have has the same soft crease of the Arizona door.
The door I have here is a late 66 door from Matuchen (sp) and I the other "funny" one is also a late 66 and I think it too is from Joizie.
The 65 GT door is salvagable but has it's own special issues so the body guy will be spending a few "extra" expensive hours bringing it up to snuff.
So...just something to think about. If you are looking for OEM doors you may want to look close. It isn't unusable and I'll bet there are a bunch of cars with this issue and nobody even notices...or not enough to do a re-paint. But if you are scrounging doors you may as well try to find ones that have the same creases as the quarter panel and fender.
Oh, as I said, both of our origninal doors had be re-skinned. And.. the skins have the sharpest creases of any. Something else to think about.

doesnt the GT door also have a light hole in it? the standard door doesn't have the light hole in it, correct?

Correct, Mark, but that just mean that I only have to cut one hole instead of two as I'm adding the courtesy lights.

Light hole has nothing to do with being a GT. The light hole was there if the car had the pony interior option.
Some pics would sure help with this discussion! Bob... Get the tintype out and develop some!
