Starter question

I upgraded from me C 4 to an AOD. So 157 teeth to 164. I think. Reading other forums online has just confused the issue.
Will the teeth count matter to the starter that was on my original C4?
Will the depth of where the started engages be different?

If I do have to change the started, does anyone recommend a good one to upgrade to?

Re: Starter question

Your starter will work just fine.

Cut to fit, Pound to shape, Paint to match

Re: Starter question

Early starters for automatics have the same engagement depth as later model Manual and Automatic transmissions.

If you had started out with an early style manual transmission and flywheel, you would have had a manual transmission starter that WOULD NOT WORK with the T5 and AOD type flywheels.

Starters do not care if 157 or 164 teeth.  The flywheel used determines which starter nose you need.  Around 82, Ford changed to using just one style of starter, which just happens to match the early automatic starters.

Re: Starter question

Very good information to know. One less item I will have to buy. BTW Steve can you resend the Cobra brake parts lists you sent me when I bought your Versailles adapters? My work email lost it and I will forward it to my personal email so I can read it. Currently in Fredericksburg watching my wife shop. I need something to read and decisions to make.
