Looking for a 5.0 & T5 - What things to watch out for

Hey there,
I'm currently looking for a 5.0 HO w/ EFI and a T5 around St. Louis to swap into my '66.  What would you experts look for before making a purchase?

Currently have a 200 and looks like I just lost cylinder 1 (0 compression but haven't dropped pan yet), so my search just got accelerated.

I'm not really looking for high performance, I'm more interesting in a running solution I can upgrade over time and am trying not to buy new.

I know the various target models to search for, do you think I should simply call a yard or am I better off watching craigslist?

Thanks,
Randy

Re: Looking for a 5.0 & T5 - What things to watch out for

My thoughts would lean toward buying a complete car that you could hear run, and possibly drive.  A lot depends on your available storage.  I found a fox Mustang GT for $300 that had an untimely meeting with a deer.  I pulled the engine & T5, and the associated harnesses, and scrapped most of the rest.  At this point I wish I had taken a lot more out of it.  If I was looking for a quick swap, I would want to know it runs, and would want to do the comp test, and see the quality of the fluids, etc.  CL is your friend.....

Re: Looking for a 5.0 & T5 - What things to watch out for

First thing I would look for is a V8 66 Mustang.  You are going to need springs, spindles, sway bars, complete front steering assembly,  front brakes, rear end, rear brakes, radiator, and the list goes on.  You are opening up a bigger can of worms than you can imagine.  If you really like the car you have and it is in good condition, AND you have the SKILLS, COINS and ROUND-TUITS to get all that stuff done, we are here, ready to help out in any way we can.

Then for a donor car, an 87-93 would be best in order for easiest fit.  Personally, I would avoid the 94-95 models, but some have used them and they work just fine.  They have a longer input shaft and the bellhousing release lever is farther down and can get in the way of exhaust.

See www.mustangsteve.com/cable for the methods to hook it up to your pedals.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: Looking for a 5.0 & T5 - What things to watch out for

I guess I should have mentioned that I've already replaced all the steering, front brakes, and the rear end, wheels & tires, replacing with v8 capable components, in anticipation of swapping.
Now I'm ready for the engine & tranny, I just don't want to get taken by someone that knows more about confirming that the engine I'm looking at really is a roller 5.0 and wc t5.  I've read quite a bit online, both here & other sites about identifying the parts, but it's not second nature to me, so I could easily make a mistake.  Like I don't really know how to tell if an uninstalled t5 is worn or not.  I don't have any fear of disassembly and rebuild, but I don't know exactly which point is walk away wear, vs. simply replace a few pieces.
I don't really have storage for another vehicle, although maybe it'd be worth it to rent a storage garage for a donor while I pull parts.

Re: Looking for a 5.0 & T5 - What things to watch out for

Here's a link to identify all of the T5's and what vehicles they were in.

http://www.britishv8.org/articles/borg-warner-t5-id-tags.htm

You really want the 5.0 Mustang WC T5 which showed up around 1985.  Let's face it, a Fox 5.0 Mustang with a T5 will have worked its way down the food chain by now, and if the trans is out of the car in 2014, you would be wise to presume it will need work, and pay accordingly.
