Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Did a test fit of the engine into the car today to see if I had the motor mounts on backwards. Still not sure. The way I have it has the engine sitting a little further back, but not enough for the radiator and fan to not touch other.

I appreciate anyone insight into my options.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

I notice you have just the motor in place WITHOUT the trans. The trans will slightly pull the motor back, and down. This mite be all the clearance you need. I'd try fitting them both as an assembly before jumping to any conclusions.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

looks like the motor is too far from the firewall to me, may just be the angle of the dangle that the pic was taken.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Nasty65 I think this picture does show the engine further away, my son and I ended up swapping the brackets from left to right and it shifted the engine back by about an inch.
Derek my intent was to see if I had the brackets on correctly before attaching the transmission and doing the final install.
It was very late last night, so a fresh brain and coffee will hopefully reveale some options. I left it in the engine bay over night. My goal is to have the engine and transmission in the car this weekend.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Pictures of my setup.  The aluminum radiator core is 2.25" thick, the tank is 2.75" thick and the radiator is mounted in the stock location.  The fan is a 2-speed Spal.  The distance between the fan and water pump pulley post is about 5/16".  I did shave some material off the pulley post to give more room.
Regarding the motor mounts, I do not think you can install them incorrectly w/o it being quite obvious.  You could check the distance from the engine to the rear transmission mount to verify.

Hope this helps.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

I think you got the mounts on backwards. That's a lot of room between the engine and the firewall. Even without your bellhousing on, it's still a lot of room. My setup looks like BobE

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Yeah I agree with Tmac. Your motor mounts are on backwards.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

You can be sure by installing the tranny.  When it is mounted, (or just use the tranny dimensions) the engine cannot move much.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Thanks JamesW. I forgot you live just down the road. Let me go out to the shop and find my phone. I was looking up the torque converter specs to torque down the nuts.

A few more pictures with better measurements and how I have my passenger side bracket set up.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

I jacked the engine up slightly on the front, but after seeing JamesW sweetheart of a car up close I think the engine sits at a steepr angle that what I did. Engine and Transmission are married and ready to install. I need to find some friends to help install. They are both hovering about 2 inches off the cradle.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

BobE, it looks like I am going to have to head down the electric path. Hope I can squeeze another inch out of my setup to get a fan in there.
Thank you everyone for posting pictures.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Mocha, nothing to do with the clearance, but I see the spark plug holes and exhaust ports open.  It would be a shame to see something inadvertently fall into any of those holes.  I always put in a set of old spark plugs and stuff blue shop towels into the exhaust ports.  Just a suggestion.
That is really a pretty engine.  You have done a good job.
Enjoy

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Thanks Pablo. I had pulled the plugs so I could rotate engine back to TDC. I don't have a good blank for the exhaust. card board would work.

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Check your motor mount brackets, the ones that bolt to the car.. I think when I installed mine, they were stamped "L" and "R".

Good, fast or cheap. Pick any two...

Re: Test install of engine exposes Radiator issue.

Success on engine and Transmission installation. A few friends came over and we were able to get them installed without any drama. Who ever suggested that the transmission on would help pull the engine backwards was very correct. I believe I have enough room to install the mechanical fan now.
What is the best distance between blades and radiator? I am ordering two different depth fan spacers that will get me to around 1/2 inch of the radiator.
Fan shroud is going to be fun.
