Disc brake options for 1966 manual transmission car

What are my best choice for converting from drum to disc on a 1966 with original V-8 and 3 spd manual transmission? Currently has single reservoir master cylinder. What duel MC should I use? Can I upgrade to power also? if so which booster will work, and which MC to match?
I am new to the Forum. I just recently purchased my 1966 Mustang Convertible from my wife's uncle. He purchased it new in 1966. I drove it 868 miles to get it home. It runs great! I will post pictures once the forum allows it.

Thanks

Yes you can do power brakes and disc conversions. What size wheels ya wanna run?

Other things you'll need are some brake line and fittings I'd redo all the hard lines while your doing the front. I got all my lines from a hydraulic shop. They were way easy to cut flare bend and look good to they are nickel plated. You'll need a double flare tool as well and a vise to make holding the flare bar easier..

Re: Disc brake options for 1966 manual transmission car

welcome to the forum.  I bought my MC from Mustang Steve along with his revised brake pedal assembly.  I am running Kelsey-Hayes disc brakes which are just like the OEM.  Steve has more info on his site

Re: Disc brake options for 1966 manual transmission car

This is posted at the very top of Steve's page:
This conversion kit fits 1965-66 Mustangs with automatic transmissions
(will fit standard if you have cable or hydraulic clutch only)
with one kit to fit 67-70 Mustangs & Cougars

I have the original 3 spd manual transmission. I plan on keeping my original 14" wheels for now. What are my options? niether one of the options listed will work unless I buy new 17' wheels or convert to cable clutch setup.

Re: Disc brake options for 1966 manual transmission car

For 14" wheels, I would install the original Kelsey Hayes 4-piston fixed calipers.  You will not have to remove your spindles to do it, and you can round up the parts from several vendors (I have an excel spreadsheet with all the parts required, free for the asking) or buy a kit like CSRP (I can help with that also).

As for power brakes...  Using the original 3-speed linkage precludes use of a booster that will work well.  There are boosters out there that will bolt up and provide some boost, but the pedal ratio typically stays the same as a manual brake and you get a mushy pedal feel and an odd-looking Chinese booster.  I prefer to use all Ford parts whenever possible.  I would suggest you try the brakes in manual configuration using a 15/16" 74 Maverick manual disc/drum master cylinder.  Wait until you decide to replace that three speed with a modern five speed transmission having an overdrive gear.  Then you can install the cable clutch system and booster all at the same time, along with a new 1" bore master cylinder.  You can opt for the 1" master cylinder when initially installing the discs, but the pedal effort will be higher than with the 15/16" MC.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.
