Got into a parts hangup on putting the engine back together so I decided it would be a good afternoon to clean up the wiper motor and figure out why it behaves strangely.
Well, I got it cleaned up but for the rest I need a MWMP (Mustang Wiper Motor Pro).
I runs fine and seems to be in decent shape and both speeds work. But when the switch is turned off it reverses to park. It always parks but it reverses from where ever it is in the cycle to park.
Before I ruin something trying to figure it out, has anyone else experienced this or just knows what causes it?

Sooo its not making a full sweep BEFORE it parks?
Maybe that's how the "old stuff" just works. Does it make any goof/grinding sounds when it goes to park?
If the linkage is not bent or dried out might just be how it suppose to happen.
Mine would just stop in mid sweep when I cut it off....so last time I had the speedo out I oiled that puppy and now it does its thang, no prob.
Since you didn't state what year/make/model/color/2door or 4//etcAT or std. trans/engine size.......................not able to make an accurate detrmination!!![]()

You are soooooo right Mike...I should be shot or at least beaten to a pulp for not stating that my car is a 66 coop withh no doors, hood, fenders, engine, trans, MC or booster, brakes, seats, glass, waring, trim, gas tank, deck lid, grill, lights of any kind, wheels, or tars, or a radio or glove box door, or steering wheel or box. It also doesn't have a windshield wiper motor but I do and it don't work rat.
The one I have is from a 66 coupe, mine, that has a lot of new metal and a fresh paint job...see my abattoir, ah I mean my avatar, and is a two-speed...the wiper motor not the coupe...and it runs bass-ak-wards to park...the wiper motor, not the car which is permanently parked due to all the suff mentioned above that it ain't got.

BB, got negative to ground? May not matter, just know DC stuff can sometimes work strange when not groundes correctly?

Thanks Howard. Yup, I bench tested it with the factory harness and the gound connected and the motor case gounded. HMMM, didn't gound the switch, I wonder. Naw, it's been doing this since we bought it. Behaves on the bench exactly like it does in the car.

Hi BB. I'm not a wiper motor expert but I think this U-tube video may show why your motor reverses. Reverse current is applied to stop the motor at the exact spot for park. The video is not very long and explains the concept better than I can and may put you on the right track to fix it.

So you got a 2 speed electric motor running your car, every time you shut the motor off the car backs itself into the garage. Got it. The only thing that I know that can reverse a DC motor is flopping the politary. You got something hooked wrong. Best I can tell from these crumy schematics, the 1 speed motors use ground to park the wipers. The 2 speed motors use positive. Do you have some type of hybred. Maybe this can help. There is a little more going on than I have marked but this is the just of it.

Thanks Bob and Walt. I will read that crumby scizzy and watch you tube and see what I can figure out. It does use pos. to drive it to park but it does it through a switch that opens when it gets to park. That much I figured out. I also figured that it is supplying two differerent circuits with pos in low and in high...I mean, two hot wires in each speed. Or is it two in low and one in high. Have to check again. then it supplies the low speed ckt through a switch when the dash switch is turned off and the cam opens that second switch when it gets to park.

Talk about picky. At least yours turn off when you turn the switch off.

I had talked about mine that would not shut off when they were wet. The other day, I washed the car, purposefully did NOT turn on the wipers because I did not want to have to deal with them not shutting off. Guess what... They came on by themselves and then went off after the car was dried. Never touched the switch, and no water is getting under the dash.

Steve I didn't think they had that option in 66. If you have no water getting in,the only wiper wire going under the hood goes to the washer pump. Maybe that is getting shorted out when wet and causing problems some how.
BB maybe a broken cam or switch inside the motor?

Duh...The two wires that are tied together in low or high are the field wires. It ain't a PM motor...it needs a field. Speed is controlled by the voltage applied to the armature, hence the the low speed wire goes through a resistor and the high speed wire bypasses the resistor.
If I'm reading your skizzy right, Walt, there should be a ground source at the switch so today I'll be doing more experimenting on the bench. Terry says his does this depending on the position that he turns the switch off.

After scratching my head until I have very little hair left...and some of you know that I had little to start with...I have determined that the switch reverses the field current in the off position which could have something to do with the motor reversing.
I have decide to live with it and make the conversion to a 67 motor one of my winter projects. Ford must have hired some confused, mental deficient electrical engineer to figure out how to do a two-speed, self parking wiper motor for 65-66. I'm pretty sure other were already doing it much simpler...GM, Chrystler, and I think my 60 Bugeye Sprite had one...and that was Lucas. But hey...Ford's system used twice as many wires to do the same thing only not as well.
In 67 they came around to a simple (conventional) four wire system and if I can make the motor fit, that's what I'll use eventually.

I'm with you on this on Bob, the more I looked at it I thought maybe that how it is supposed to work. (Never had mine running) Keep in mind marijuana was around a lot in the 60's and LSD wasn't illegal till 66.
The wires coming out of my motor are frayed, I was planning on upgrading to a 2 speed delay F100 wipers. I picked up a couple late 70’s F100 delay wiper switches a few years back fairly reasonable. All I need to get is a 70’s wiper motor. Ifin you want one I’ll send you one, don’t need them all.

According to CJ P-Parts, the same motor was used in Mustangs from 67 to 73 (I think) and from 78 to 86 (same as the 67) and they sell a "rebuilt" one....cleaned and painted....for $75. It's a four wire unit (low, high, park, ground) which is fairly standard. The 67 + mustang switches are slide type or something else other than what the 66 has but I'll bet I can find something that will work or make it with some lathe work and some microswitches.
It would be nice to compare that truck unit with the 67 Mustang. Also, what kind of switch did the truck use and did it have a washer ckt in the switch?
I may take you up on you always kind offer but this will be a winter projectd. No more custom stuff now.
We'll cuss and discuss this at the bash.

I have a wiper switch and delay module from a '78 F150 that I'll be installing in my '69 F100.
Here's some information on the swap (this is for a Ford truck but much of the information can probably be transferred over to an older Mustang).

For what it's worth. I''l bet if you cut the green (#65) wire from the red (#63) and splice it to the yellow (#61) wire the wipers will park foward. Just saying.

You know, you are probably right. Sure is nice to have a 'tronic wizzard on the forum.
I may check that out tomorrow. But, I gotta tell ya Walt, I'm seriously considering going to the 79 F150 setup with intermitant, two speed wipers. Might as well get it done now while there is nothing under the dash.

BB Just sent you out a switch with delay box from a 70's ford truck. I never tested these but should work. If you use it fine, if you don't bring it to the bash. I just bought a used wiper motor on ebay. I bought used because the pics I see at the parts stores don't have a connector on them. Guess you can put a different style connector on it if you want.
