Adjusting timing

Guys, I'm still trying to reduce oil loss at high cruise rpm's from excess crankcase pressure. At 3000 rpm's on the interstate, crankcase pressure overcomes the PCV valve, burning some oil, and oil starts to mist out of the breather cap. It's fine at lower speeds, and even WOT doesn't seem to cause the problem. It helped slightly when I spaced the vc baffle under the PCV valve lower by 3/4". I have tried 5 different PCV valves. Compression test shows 175-180 psi on all cylinders. I have read that high ignition timing can cause this problem. It's a 289/4 bbl with Accel electronic dizzy, pre-set with 24* mechanical advance and 10* vacuum. Initial is 12*. That looks like 46* total at mid-throttle, verified by the timing marks at roughly 2500 rpm's or so. At WOT, I would expect the vac advance to drop out, leaving ~34*. So, I want to reduce timing at 3000 rpm cruise to see if it helps fix the problem. I can adjust the mech adv with the stop in the base, and the vac adv in the canister. Any advice before I start changing stuff? I think the advance springs are ok, with 1 light and 1 stiffer spring.

I would suggest you do a leak-down test to determine engine condition.  Not the same as a compression test.  175-180 sounds like a good solid number, but SOMETHING is allowing the compression to leak into the crankcase.

I am ignorant of how the timing can cause that.  Please explain.

What do your valve cover baffles look like?
