In the middle of my 5.0 swap I realized that the stock '88 5.0 headers won't fit in my '66 with unmodified shock towers.
Since I didn't budget for new headers, anybody have recommendations for economical headers? I'm not looking for high performance, simply looking for reliable daily driver performance and fuel injection reliability.
I have manual steering, manual brakes, 88 5.0, T5 w/ MS Cable clutch. & stock v8 style suspension w/ Granada discs.
Driver side has about 2.75" of clearance between the head & shock tower.
Can I pull used ones for a yard car or am I stuck buying new???

If you are not looking for performance, than I think the 289 stock exhaust manifolds would work. That would be the most economical. I dont think $150 - 200 headers would hold up to well. Use stock manis first and save up for good headers in the future.

I've found that "economy type" headers work well and last several years with proper prep. That's all I've ever used. Using hi-temp header paint before installing and following paint instructions will add life to them. Of course the paint burns off after a few months/years butt....headers should give several years of service. Once they start getting surface rust...the next time you need to pull the engine or headers...just use POR-15 brush on Hi-Temp exhaust manifold paint. Perserves them even longer.
10-15 year life span....maybe more!

Patriot makes an uncoated Tri-Y header that looks good for the price.
I have the cearamic coated equivalent that I am happy with.
VHT makes a spray on ceramic coating that will do a good job of protecting the above header at a lower cost than the factory coatings, just make sure to follow the instructions on the can.
If I were going that route I would bead blast the headers and get as much of the spray as possible inside the tubing as well.

I doubt very much they would fall into the "budget" catagory of headers, but I have been a fan of the JBA shorties for a long time now. They fit well, are made very strong, seal excellent, are nickel plated (at least back when I bought mine), and fit every conceivable combination of 289/302 you can think of (manual trans, cable clutch, power steering, etc.). Just my .02 cents worth.....had a pair on my 66 GT fastback for a LONG time now (since 1996 or there abouts). They run better than the stock manifolds and get better mileage too.

i'm running the heddman coated shorties sold by Summitt. Fit up is very nice. No interference anywhere. I tried the Patriot Clippsters and they hit the shock tower.

Can't beat a good ol' 289 HIPO manifold for durability, maintainability and fitment. I have JBA shorties on my 427 stroker and they do fit and seal very well. If I ever build a car with a 5.0 based Windsor in it, it will have the HIPO manifolds and 2-1/4" exhaust system.

Still running the $99.00 Summit Full Length Headers I bought in 1993. I touch them up with some High Temp Paint every other year. At some point Id like some ceramic coat headers. But Im waiting until I switch my clutch linkage to cable or hydraulic.

I have a 65 with a 87 302 HO and AOD I put Hedman ceramic coated shorties on it. they fit very well BUTT! They started rusting after a year and Hedman recoated them. all i had to do was pay for shipping $80 total, after another year guess what, they started rusting again, Hedman offered to recoat them again all I had to do was pay shipping, another $80. They said my car was subject to high moisture and that caused the rusting! HA aren't all cars! I guess I'm supposed to keep my headers in my house wrapped in plastic while not in use!
They fit very well though!!
Do you get the feeling I'm a bit bitter?? YOU BET, I just try to warn anyone about buying their JUNK! I decided to just run them rusty like most CHEAP headers and eventually replace them with some GOOD ones later.
But they fit well!!

I put HIPO manifolds and a 2 1/4" exhaust on when I did the engine/trans six years ago...or is it seven?...anyway, I brushed on a a couple coats of POR15 high temp exh. paint and they still look good, fit great, and probably work as well as muffled headers for 99% of the driving a street car sees. The only issue I see is that they are designed for 2" so I have a short section of 2" stepped up to 2 1/4" leaving the manifold. That is probably costing me .000002 seconds on my 1/8 mile times but since I don't race it....I don't notice.
Acutally, now that I think of it, the vortex effect may be helping to scavange the manifold and taking eight or ten seconds off of my zero to 60 time...if I cared.

I agree with Steve. I have a set of long tube Hedmans on my 66/289 that were originaly for the 351 conversion. I have had to modify them for my MS clutch cable and fab a heat shield. HIPO headers would have solved all of those problems as well as being able to change plugs in less than an hour. I plan on changing mine out when budget allows.

Thanks for the info guys. Hipo reproductions looks like they're in the $350 range, which seems to be quite a bit less than JBA's & Doug's, so maybe I'll look that route a bit more.

All I can say is I've had these on my car now for about 5 years and they look very good still. Do not need to pull and recoat.

If $350 is acceptable to you then check these out... Stainless steel tri-y's for $325.99.

No, they did not hang down low. I did have some fitment issues with my z-bar, but I was able to work around it by making a longer upper rod and a shorter lower rod.
