Can you get 3 degree's positive caster with the stock strut rods on a 67 Mustang? The front end shop I went to says no, looking at it I dissagree.

I don't know if you can get 3 degrees but if you could, I'd wonder about the effect on the bushing on the lower control arm. One of the thing you do when you go with an ajustable strut is to install a spherical bearing in the lower control arm so it doesn't bind when the strut is adjusted.

2 degrees is fine on a 67...on my 70 Mach1 I can easily get 5 degrees but the car is happy at 4 degrees....jj

Thanks for the reponse, I am trying to set this with the spec's from Daze Automotive and he doesn't mention changing the strut rods. I did the Shelby drop and I am just trying to get the old girl tracking right

To gain more caster cut the rear adjuster strut rod nuts in half...you'll pick up a little more positive....jj

Typically can get 3.5+ caster with stock components on 67-70 Mustang. LCA inner bushings do tend to try to "walk" a little and try to move rearward in the LCA, but a pre-emptive small tack of weld will keep them from doing it. The angle is not so extreme that the bushings get damaged.
Shelby and Branda have always suggested 3.5+ degrees caster.

stro, did you get my email asking fro more info?? Based on what you said in your email there may be other issues and if you can give me some more info I can probably help you sort them out.

You might check the upper arms to see if the shafts are centered or offset. Most of the arms we get in here are offset to one side. If they are bolted in the car that way, one ball joint will be forward and the other will be rearward of where it should be.
You can add caster with the upper arm by offsetting the shaft one full spin from center on both arms and add a shim under the front bolt on both arms. With that done, getting 3deg. of caster will be easier.

REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
