Holley carb throttle got stuck today

Never had this issue. And all of a sudden I let go of throttle, and it just keeps going.

NO IDEA!! put it in park, and the engine goes 2500-3000-------400000 and I just killed the ignition. OK .. so open the hood. and the throttle was getting stuck a bit. my idle is up to 1000 or 1200.. I can pull the throttle back with my foot and it goes down.. What could be the issue? any ideas? never had this issue before ?

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

Is it sticking whether it's running or not? If there is nothing obvious going on external to the carb, then I would check for any gunk on or around the throttle plates.

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

A couple years back I kept having this same thing happen to me as reoccuring problem, but never consistently...just  sometimes.  One day when it did this I just left it revved up (instead of pulling the pedal up with my toe), put it in neutral and shut the engine off and coasted to a stop on the side of the road.  Then I popped the hood and looked and I could see what the problem was.  My throttle linkage was binding (but only occasionally when conditions were just right).  I made some adjustments to my linkage and haven't had this problem since.

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

First thing to check is the electric choke.  Did something happen, maybe loss of electrical, that let the choke close a bit and caused the fast idle cam to come into the picture?  Maybe the choke stove rotated on its own?  Had one recently where somebody did not bother to reinstall the choke housing gasket and the stove would not tighten properly.

Otherwise, look for obvious obstructions.  Spark plug wires in the way of linkage, improperly installed return springs, (springs should be redundant and strong enough to positively return the throttle to idle but not be so tight they will cause wear to the carb's throttle shaft seals.), linkage that came loose, or a in-need-of-adjustment linkage between the primary and secondary main shafts. Whenever an idle change is made, you must readjust that linkage.  Part of its function is to make sure the secondary throttle shuts 100% when the primary is at idle.

I suppose if you really messed up and overtightened one corner of the carb, or something similar, you could warp the base enough for the throttle shafts to bind up.

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

Could be choke. It came off prematurely today when I started it. it started fine . But as I tapped throttle instead of going one step down it went all the way down to normal idle and then came up as I increased throttle .

I will take a pic of some parts I saw , I wasn't sure if they were ok or not just to be sure

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

if its not the choke then remove the throttle linkge and see if it moves freely then open the throttle 1/4 of the way and let it return by itself slowly . . it all is ok, then start the car and open it 1/4 and let it return slowly . . if it sticks, your throttle shaft has excessive play on the drivers side . . very common prob on ancient carbs.

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

Is the return spring still there connected between carb and manifold? My spring broke one time then I installed a double return spring.

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

There are two on mine too. One that came with and the other that I rigged up to make sure the throttle closed fully when let go.

Update. Coming home, I didn't disturb the choke and let it take its own course with just a little help from me to bring the rpm's down. And then no sticking at all. Idled just fine. Didn't misbehave. Could be that I didn't let the choke settle in well on the first start and it reacted to cold air flow on top of it . Or something freak like that.. I hope that was it

I will find out. By the way .. Tried to spray carb cleaner around the carb gasket the other day and heard the engine rpm's change (lower) .. So.... Might be looking at a vacuum leak there .. Don't you think?

Normally...if you spray carb cleaner around carb base....IF the gasket is bad (or there IS a vacuum leak) the RPM's would go up!
Carb-to-manifold gaskets are cheap...I'd replace and clean intake/carb base really well......tighten the carb bolts evenly  corner-to-corner not side-by-side.

Re: Holley carb throttle got stuck today

One more thing related to the choke. There is a plastic high idle cam on the choke shaft. I had a problem with a 570 Holly where the cam would stick. It had some slag on the cam I removed it sanded it off and have not had any more problems.
