coil springs on 1966 coupe

let me start by saying thankyou to all that have helped me on my 9 yr project.got it done this august and drove it for the first time, now to work out the bugs and make more mods.its a 66 coupe,289.auto(t5 in the works for the spring),9" w/3.70 traclock, shelby drop,1"sway bar, roller spring perches, all new front suspension, granada power disc.now my problem:i have stock v8 coils in front with 1" lift rear leafs.when all together the front was too low for my liking(lots of tire rubbing),so i put the twist in spacers that got it where i liked, had an alignment done to dazes spec and all was good handled very well.the more i thought about it i didnt like those spacers so i installed global west spacers the height was where i wanted so had it aligned again and couldnt get it back where it was,but very close.now the handling is terrible, under acceloration and cresting a small hill, when the nose lifts steering is floating everywhere and the carwants to go to one side or the other and the drivers tire will start squealing.also when i put in the globalwest spacers i measure the spring legth and it was 13 3/4".i forgot to say it also has a borgeson pwr steering kit on it.what i would like to know is what spring would i use to get the ride height i want without cutting coils and without spacers.the car did handle very well before the globalwest spacers.thanks for your help

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

I ordered GT springs from Glazier's Mustang Barn.  They were very helpful and I'm very happy with the stance and handling of my car.  http://mustangbarn.com/

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

All that wallowing around and stuff sounds like you need shocks.

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

It sounds a little (or a lot) like you have changed the height enough to alter the geometry putting you into Granda Spindle bump steer.  I think at certain ride heights it may lessen the impact of bump steer but your spacers may have put you over the edge.  The Borgeson steering likes as much caster as you can give it and the Daze specs are for stock steering.  From what I read 4 degrees is good and 5 is better but that is hard to do without adjustable strut rods.

You didn't mention your tire/wheel/offset combo regarding tire rub.

But, as above, make sure someone didn't forget to hook up the shocks after all the work.

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

yes shelby drop.and shocks are kyb with 1000 miles on them.i do have adjustable srut rods.the first alignment went to the ford shop with old school alignment rack and he did the alignment with no shims, the car drove fine the second alignment(after the global west spacers) was as a shop with new computer rack they had it 4 days and screwed it up bad didnt charge me but the car was unsafe to drive so i went back to the ford garage and they took 2 days to get it where it is now.

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

sorry to keep posting but the shocks are hooked up as i did the work and the tire rubbing was because the fender was down 1 1/2-2" on the tire

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

Granada spindles on a 65/66 Mustang cause the exact symptoms you described.  MustangSteve has Granada spindles with the correct geometry for the 65/66 Mustang.  They have the beefier axle and will correct the steering issues associated with Granada spindles.

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

They are an exact swap.  The radius arm just has the correct geometry for your car.

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

Springs ... Progressive motorsports track spring.  They have a GT666 and a heavier track version.  I had the track version before the new engine went it.  I cut them too short, then replaced them but messed up and got the lighter ones by mistake.  They are on my car now with 1/2 coil cut off.  I want to go back with another set of the performance version when I get that round-tuit.  Don't let the performance designation fool you.  They ride very good.

Spindles will drop ship.  Email me and we can discuss.  steve@mustangsteve.com

Re: coil springs on 1966 coupe

I have edelbrock performer 1" drop coils thinner insulator bushing to gives 1" drop I've gotten many complements at mustang ranch a local mustang restoration shop on the car.  Rides awesome how ever I have only put on 90 miles so they are still breaking in so they're still pretty stiff.  I also made a rack swap for my Stang and have no bump steer.   I love it it feel like a new car but with looks to go along with it
