65 power steering issue.. wierd one this time

So

Power steering hose was changed twice in two weeks lol I didnt knoiw the correct routing, so had to make my own hose, and what not.. all working good. Made a trip to Steve's place.

Came back , took it out, and the steering was STIFF! I was like great .. leak again.. BUT

NOPE!! the power steering hose had no leaks, neither did the two smaller ones. Not on the return hose either. Fluid level showed good.. and still no power steering.

control valve was redone starting of this year.

So my diagnosis: Pump is bad ?? and stock hoses need to be installed the correct way. RIGHT? what can I check. Its a simple little system..!! I started the car, and undid the pressure hose, I had some pressure.. but not enough power steering fluid came out.. I would expecxt like 2 quarts or a bit less. but this was a quart.. STILL the pump showed "full" ? why ?

Should I just get the new pump and hoses and the correct hose bracket and install it all.

Also where does the power steerinf hose bracket mount?

Re: 65 power steering issue.. wierd one this time

You can spend alot of money fixing it right.  How about an electric power steering system for $1,100?  You already have the quick ratio box.  Then you could also install a Shelby quick steer kit and really make it turn!

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Dreams sir .. Those are some dreams .. I definitely will be doing that. I have already sown the seed here at home lol.

Till then... The cars gotta drive!! Haha ..

I have a new pump and new hoses coming with the correct bracket

Can anyone PLEASE help me with where that power steering hose bracket gets installed!!?? For the life of me I can't figure out where that should be!!? please let me know .. That will be the one thing standing between me and a working car at this point .. For now atleast.

Do you have both ??

The electrical mount one .. What is that?

And the one below . The stock bracket .. The mounting screw for it .. Is that in the frame side ? Or the suspension somewhere or the engine mount?

Please let me know

Re: 65 power steering issue.. wierd one this time

My hoses were so long that, even in the hose clamp bracket, they still seemed to want to droop down too much. So I got the large electrical wire holders to hold them up by the crossmember. They are not original to the car, but were necessary to keep the hoses up a little. I only used them because the person who helped me had used them also, and they work great. The "Electrical Wire Holders" have a thick piece of rubber inside, protecting the hose.

These pictures are not of my car, but from the person, here on this site, that sent them to me. I did mine just like this however.

Hope this helps.

Re: 65 power steering issue.. wierd one this time

Not sure if this applies to all pumps ,but I changed the hose on a car with 5.0 due to pressure hose leak. Power steering was working fine before. Now very weak or no power assist. In the process of changing the pump noticed the pistion just inside the pump was missing . found it on the floor wher I had changed the hose.

Well the power steering fluid that came out had a lot of fine shavings.. that had to be a rotating part.. nothing that'll gring slowly like that.. So I got a new pump now. its installed. Routing hoses now

Anyone know the torque spec on the bolt on the spindle of the lower control arm ??

I am going to uninstall that bolt, put the hose baracket there and install the bolt there. So what torque spec do ilook for when tightening it back down???

Re: 65 power steering issue.. wierd one this time

No, i don't recall having the problem. Do you have on of these on the slave cylinder. It drops the setup down a little to help avoid headers. I couldn't tell by your photos, but if you don't have one you probable need it.

Re: 65 power steering issue.. wierd one this time

Im not sure I would try and put the hose bracket on the lower control arm bolt. That bolt when loosened can cause your front end to go out of alignment. Be careful, you can change your camber inadvertently by messing with that bolt.

Re: 65 power steering issue.. wierd one this time

Just Removing that nut.? You know what size it is.. ? May be I can get a thin nut that size and install the bracket on top of the nut and bolt that is already there then.. Not having to remove the installed setup..

Actually

I am not going to remove that bolt at all. Just get the nut off from it, and install the bracket and install the nut back. If I said bolt before , that was a mistake . I am installing the bracket on the nut side of the lower control arm spindle bolt .. Is that still going to be an issue ??

As far as the lowering bracket , I have something like that welded on to the frame .. It lowers my slave cylinder .. Actually lowers it enough that I cant use 65 small pressure hoses on it anymore, I have to use the 67-69 small hoses .. but thanks ! Yes it is installed . Still I had the return hose hitting the header . It's a low pressure hose, so I am just going to make one myself with a small metal part with fitting and insert a rubber hose with a clamp to route around and to the power steering pump.

All that say, let me know about just being able to take off the nut not the full bolt. Thanks!

By the way.. If you are garland.. Why don't you and I get together sometime !! Haha :D I live on Jupiter and Arapaho.. It's garland across the street for me

Let me know. May be you could Come by sometime , if you can.. To take a look..  you might be able to tell better haha
