Adding Power Brakes...'66 289ci/C4

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and this is my first question...I'll be adding the Borgeson PS conversion to my car(in case of figment concerns with shortened column and p/s box) which currently has the SSBC Frt disc conversion with dual chamber MC and prop valve...what is my best option of Booster? Will my current MC work or should I get a matching unit? And....I want to add rear disc sometime in the future. If you need any more info to steer me in the right direction let me know.

I tried to add pics but they wouldn't upload off of my iPad...will try again at some other time.

Thanks,

Rob

Re: Adding Power Brakes...'66 289ci/C4

Welcome to FYIFORD.  Glad you found us.
New members will need to make at least two posts before they can add pictures.  Keeps the spammers at bay.

For your Borgeson conversion, you may want to consider the MustangSteve SSBK-1 lower steering column bearing kit.  It is the part you need to finalize a Borgeson conversion.  Borgeson neglected to make something that would support the bottom end of the steering shaft and keep the steering wheel and horn contacts in a stable position.

As for power brakes, there are several that bolt on, but only one that really works well.  The MS power brake conversion has a revised pedal ratio for the power brakes, the booster bolts up flat against the firewall for a factory look and it provides plenty of clearance for any master cylinder you want to use. See http://www.mustangsteve.com/brakes for details.  It comes in several different levels of completion, from just the parts and instructions (requires fabrication) to a complete brand new pedal assembly with ballbearing pivot shaft and new booster.  The picture below shows one in a 66 with master cylinder same as yours.

The pic above is the PB-5 kit

I don't typically use theis forum as a sales tool, but since you asked the question about one of my products, I figured I would let you know exactly what is out there.  You can reuse the master cylinder you already have.  It bolts up to the booster the same as it bolts up to your firewall.

I refuse to sacrifice functionality for ease of installation.  With my parts, you might complain the day you install them because it was a bit of work, but you will enjoy the superior performance from now on.  With a lot of the aftermarket stuff designed to “bolt on”, you will enjoy one day of easy installation but then complain about the lack of performance from now on.

Thank you Steve! Your reply was right on, and I take no exception to you recommending your products. I like the Borgeson bearing recommendation, want to do the job right the first time.

Is that the "slim" booster of yours, I recall it being referenced by others that have done a PB conversion using parts from you?

Re: Adding Power Brakes...'66 289ci/C4

You will see the two pics I posted show different boosters.  I actually use one of three.  The thinner one was not shown, and it is the one I normally ship with a power brake kit.  Supply of the boosters dictates that sometimes I may not have the exact same one available.  With a cable clutch setup, I always provide a certain one because it fits best with the cable.  On cars with automatics, any of the three will work fine.  I actually prefer the rebuilt ones as they are OEM parts.  The brand new ones have never been on a car priior to yours.
Sorry my pics are not up to date as they should be.
Here is the thinner one.

RPM1135,
I just wanted to say welcome to the forum! I also wanted to let you know that I upgraded the 4 wheel drum brakes on my 64 F100 utilizing the MustangSteve kit last year and it works perfectly. Makes the old truck a joy to drive knowing that if someone pulls out in front of me I can depend on the brakes to get me stopped. MustangSteve stands behind his products and provides great customer support too. I look forward to hearing about the progress on your vehicle.

Re: Adding Power Brakes...'66 289ci/C4

I also have the MS power brake kit on my 66 t5 289 with with the MS gt from disc kit. Very happy with the results. I bought the parts and installed everything as per Steves instructions. I actually enjoyed doing the work myself
