Part of my Falcon project is the installation of a T-5, and as of right now I plan on keeping the bench seat (wife & 4 kids), the standard T-5 will put the shifter in a location that requires the trans tunnel support being cut, as well placing the shifter at a point that 2nd & 4th are diffucult to get to. The best option in the use of a Chevy S-10 tail housing swap to my T-5, this will move the shifter 8" forward and almost excatly where the factory 4 speed shifter would be located.
The down side of the swap it the speed-O doesnt work out:
Option 1 - modify the output shaft, make a sleeve, and some say the Ford T-5 speed O gear can be adapted to the S10 T-5 tailhousing.
Option 2 - Use a later model S10 Tailhousing with an electronic speed sensor, and put in a aftermarket gauge.
Option 3 - Use a GPS driven speed O.
I was wanting to build a new gauge cluster due to the condition of mine, have any of you had any experience with electric of GPS speed O's ? Would the S10 electronic speed sensor connect directly to an aftermarket gauge?

Try speedhut.com I put all new instruments in the stock dash on my 1969 Mustang I put the volt and fuel down on the console. To answer your original question I have a GPS speedo very accurate and smooth up and down.

You would also need to use the S-10 top cover, or at least the shift rail. I don't know if it helps, but the T5 was also used in Jeeps, which may provide more options.
Autometer electronic speedometers should work with the GM electronic sender without modification. They can be calibrated after instalaltion. I run one in my IROC which has a swapped in T56 that was only ever offered with an electronic speedo (unless you want to spend a lot on converting to to cable or buy an Abbot box to convert it).

Thanks for the quick response, I thought I could connect the GM VSS directly to the aftermarket speed O, from what I have read the GPS speed O may be more accurate and no calibrations to do, but more expensive. There's never just a clean cut answer.

Do you prefer a needle sweep or digital? Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't GPS speedo's all digital? If your other gauges aren't digital, it might not look good together.

One of my sons had a sbc powered early S10. When he swapped to a manual trans, I researched all the stuff to get a working speedo (lotsa V8 S10's dont have working speedos). I urged him to do the T5 swap, but GM never put the T5 behind a 350, only 305's or less. You could swap tail shafts, etc, and still get the working mechanical speedo. We ended up doing the T56 swap, and went with the Cable X box that TKO refers to. Worked great, and kept the original look in the cab.
The T56 in the S10 gives a similar shifter location as the Mustang T5 in the Falcon. We solved that by putting a 2000ish 60/40 split bench seat in the older S10. If you leave out the cup holder, it is the perfect spot for the shifter. Maybe you could do something different with the seat, and not have to have the frankenstein T5.

I put a GPS speed o in my '66, and I like it. It has a built in 0 - 60 mph in seconds and 1/4 mile speed and time. Go to this link and scroll down to it to see how I installed it.

Or...you could wait a bit and we'll all see if Wsinsly gets his stepper drive perfected for the stock Ford/SW type speedos. I have one of his low fuel warning lights with the adjustable CRV combo...neat, clean, small, simple to connect...and it works. I know Walt is working on the VSS driven speedo drive but I have no idea how far out the project is. But if you are planning aftermarket instruments anyway...I guess this is moot.
Walt, hope I didn't let any kittys out of the sack.

No cat in the bag BB. I got the electronics all figured out for the speedometer. A few twicks left to do. Just trying to find the right stepper motor to work for this application. Another motor should be here today or tomorrow. I hope to have the VSS connected to a motor that mounts directly on the back of the speedometer. The circuit will be adjustable so you can set the speedometer correctly.

Calibrating the Autometer speedo is super easy. Press a button, drive a know 2 mile distance, hit the button again. Done.

I run the Autometer Speedo and switched o the GPS running it. LOVE it. It does take a minute or so before the speedo starts moving when the car is first cranked...it's gotta find that sat in the sky. Never had it loose a signal though and it is very accurate. I tried the drive a known distance and it wasn't as easy for me as it sounded, plus the GPS just means putting a plug in the T5 speed hole.

I'm doing this for a '62 Falcon and have the later model housing. I want to use an electronic speed sensor, does anyone know how to this is done with this swap? I'm unclear as to how the reluctor will line up and imagine moving it is whats needed, but I haven't found anything on the net.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
