Finished install of UCA/spring perch/springs and Shelby drop on passenger side of 65 mustang/289/3 speed. All went well except for seating of f spring on perch. About 1.25 inches from spring stop. Man I know what the answer is going to be, but is there a way to rotate spring clockwise without taking it all apart? Thanks for any suggestions.

.
there is a tab on the perch that the end of the spring needs to butt up against . . if this is what you are talking about and it is very far away from the stop and you do not have lowering springs, it will be next to impossible to rotate it without compressing it and it would likely mess up the rubbers if you did.

Yep, you're going to have to compress it enough to rotate it back into place. Check the top and make sure the upper spring pad also stays in place.

When using a spring compressor, it is necessary to anticipate the end of the coil moving from where it was before you compressed it. Since the coil spring is nothing more than a torsion bar that is wrapped up as a coil, it does not compress in a linear fashion. This time, as you compress it with the tool, note the degree of change in the end point. You may find it easiest to release the spring slowly while holding the end of the coil against that tab until the top of the spring binds up against the upper pad.
If it is a shorter spring to begin with, I have been able to coerce them a little bit, but it is still difficult even with the shock disconnected and the UCA allowed to drop down as far as it will go.
Refer to MustangSteve's LAW, learn from it and move on. Anyone who works on Mustang alot has probably had that happen to them.

All, got the spring rotated against the spring perch tab. Those rubber pads were a pain to keep in position. Anyways completed the passenger side UCA/LCA, springs,inner/outer tie rods, new rubber strut pads. Now off to complete the driver side. Thanks for all the advise.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
