I need to install a 90 degree thermo housing to work with my serpentine set up.
I have seen some info on the net about problems with some of the ford ones.
I guess some don't have enough material between the thermostat area and the bypass outlet.
Anybody know of a good one to use with an edelbrock rpm air gap.
I attached a link to one on ebay I was thinking about getting. i see that show a slide caliper measuring that area, Is what they show sufficient or would that be a problem?
thanks for any info

I got a 4 seasons from Rockauto for just over 7 bucks. Looks good but have not run it yet.

I've had terrible luck with the chrome plated one which uses the rubber o-ring gasket. The thing seemed to corrode and subsequently leak in no time. I'm using a chrome Ford Racing one which has been working well for nearly 9 years. This is the part but it seems it may not be available anymore.
If you want to splurge you can get the Motorcraft part from Summitracing for $62.

Seems like I saw one around here the other day. Will look for it. One garage point plus shipping is the price!

I got one from NAPA way cheaper than Ford, powder coated it black and good to go!

I am suffering through the same problem. You' re right about the bypass, the hole on the thermostat housing is much larger then the hole on the air gap intake. I first bought a thermostat housing from NAPA, three tries, three times it leaked. First and second time I used aviation form a gasket number 2 on both sides, third time I used a RTV made for thermostat and water pumps. Always weeped out the bottom. Bought a Ford Racing thermostat housing. Unlike the NAPA housing, it has a raised ridge cast into the housing around the thermostat, so I though this was the answer - no way, first try it leaked, second time it leaked, both with form a gasket on both sides of the gasket. After running it through three heat cycles, it did stop leaking. But I was running a 192 degree thermostat, and things were just running too hot, I just switched to a 180 thermostat, and you guessed it, it is weeping at the bottom again. Along the way I have tried multiple gaskets, Stant, Mr Gasket, Fel Pro

You guys ever try "The Right Stuff" from Permatex? It's a pretty amazing product.

Yeah, costs a bit more and the can tends to clog when stored for long periods of time, but I've never hadbut a leak with it.

I did some web searches on Saturday to see if there was an upper hose that works with the 90 degree housing and a stock-ish radiator. The best info I could find was a 1988 Bronco II with the 2.9 liter and manual transmission LOWER radiator hose. Both ends are 1.5". I had to trim about 2" from the end that mounts to the housing and it fit perfectly on my 24" radiator with the upper fitting on the passenger side. The way it is curved, I am pretty sure it will also fit narrower radiators as well.

Thats good info on the hose.
That will be something I have to deal with once I drop the engine in.
I'm running the big griffin so should be very similar to the 24" radiator
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
