so when are you going to make one for your Galaxie?

No rack and pinion for me.  I am seriously considering putting the Dodge D50 box in there though.  I have a brand new one from when I was messing around with putting it in a Mustang.   It is nearly identical in size to the Galaxie box.  So, unlike the borgeston conversion for Galaxie's, the steering column probably would not have to be modified.  The problem I have with that is finding a MANUAL Galaxie center link.   Allmost all these cars had power steering.  The adaptor piece, different from the one that fits a Mustang, is made out of unobtainium dollars.    I think you made an awesome mod, though!

I have one... in fact I have all the manual steering from a 61.  Make me a fair offer and its yours.

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

Ive been doing some research.  It appears they have different part #"s.  C1  vs.  C3.  So there must be some differences.   Do you have the pitman arm and the idler?  The whole kit and kaboodle?   PM me. We can talk about it.

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

I do have those parts.  I will dig through my spare parts pile tomorrow and get back to you.   I do know 61-64 steering systems are interchangable but there are some differences, not sure what they are.  I also know from when I was messing with the OEM power steering there was a difference between the drag link on a 62 and 63.  They were the same shape and functioned the same but mounted to the control valve differently.  I would assume the manual set up is the same in that it is basically the same but some how a little different.  OR is is possible the difference in the # is simply the year??  being that my part is a 61 c1 and yours is a 63 c3??

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

I know they have to be close with some small changes.   Thats why if I do this I want to go with the whole thing, so there are no mismatched parts.  Sounds like a plan!   I was dreading reusing that control valve setup... I havent forgot the burst hose right after I bought that thing.

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

After looking over the differences between the 61 and 63 centerlinks, it appears there is quite a bit more curvature in the 63 center link.  And they changed the idler arm structure quite a bit.   I dont think the 61 parts would work for me.  Thanks for the offer.   It appears my best option is to just spend the $ and buy the center link power to manual conversion link part.

I can't image more curve than this one has

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

Funny they had that much curve it's called a parellelagram steering set up.  Combine that with a loose box yikes.

I have to agree with you!  That does not look like the 61 center link I was looking at.  That looks a hec of a lot like what I need to do that.   Lets work out a deal.

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

I was 99% sure it would work.  I know the 61 -64 steering is basically the same, and was interchangeable as a system. Ford made some miner tweaks from 61-64 but over all interchangeable.  As far as the quality of the parts I would say that if a NOS part was a 10 and an unusable scrap was a 1 this is probably some where around a 7.  Its in good shape, especially for a 54 year old part.  The bushings in the idler are are solid but I would probably replace them simply because the parts are out of the car.  The pitman arm connection on the other end of drag link is also in good shape and spins freely worth out any unwanted play, but when I dug it out of my "spare parts" pile the thread on the tip of it where slightly dinged. I was easily able to fix them by running a die over the threads.  I don't know what the value of the parts are as I have not been looking for one, but you have, so make me a fair offer and its yours.  I will ship it as inexpensively as I can and then let you know what the shipping cost was.

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

The "61"  that I was looking at  the idler arm had screw on bushings very similar to control arm bushings.  Maybe there was some kind of change on these in that model year?   Who knows.    As far as an offer, Im sending you a PM.

I came back online just to add a PS: I like the artwork on the box!   That was pretty cool.

Re: Finally getting around to putting the GM j-car rack in my Galaxie

What did you decide to use on the gallaxie to secure the bottom of the column to the fire wall? I couldn't quite decide how I wanted to do this on the stang mine I patched in the firewall and used a small bracket and a u bolt.  Now I think I should've purchased a 65 mustang upper steering column mount, patch the firewall and weld that second bracket to it. Oh well you always think of the should have's after fabricating something.

The Galaxie originally came with a rag joint between the the steering box and the column so from the factory there is a removable panel that screws into the fire wall and bolts to the the column to secure it.  I had to modify mine however because I swapped out the Galaxie column (which is about 1.5")  for the wider Mustang column.
