I ran into a snag today when trying to install the radio antenna. I purchased, by application, a new antenna for my '65. The antenna mounting, has a plate that goes under the inside of the fender that has a raised tab on it to properly align the antenna on the fender. (see photo). The problem being, the hole in the fender doesn't have a slot for the raised tab to go in. (See photo) I suspect the fender was replaced by prior owner and the repo places don't always put the correct holes for items that need to go back on. Are original antennas that way or did I get a wrong one? If they did have a slot for the tab, can someone let me know where to cut the slot in the opening for the tab. If I try to guess, and I miss, the antenna will always be crooked. Thanks Jerry

No, the original fender has a "keyhole" notch, that comes out of the big hole. I think you bought the right thing.

Do you happen to know where the notch is on the hole? From the front of the car, 9:00, 6:00 or what. Thanks Jerry

Here is a picture of a 66 fender I had out back. I always assumed the holes were stamped in, but this one appears to have been put in with a hole saw. I never saw the antenna on the car, so use at your own risk. I would imagine if you take a close look at the part you have, you can determine the position for the notch by the taper, if any, that is built into the antenna.
Online!
My notch is at the 3:00 position - it points directly to the passenger side of the car so it probably shows that for each aftermarket antenna, there are different notches. Does the tab extend up into the antenna base? If it does, assemble the adaptor piece and determine the alignment you need for your system. Either that or cut the notch off and stick the antenna on with a little RTV to keep it from turning (as a last resort).

The notch on my '66 is same as Gary's, 3 o'clock, appears punched. The notch itself is semicircular, about 3/16" diameter.

Gary, thanks for the info. When you say 3:00 o'clock position, is that when you are sitting in the passenger seat? When I held the antenna up in the hole as best I could with the slope of the piece on top of the fender, that appeared to look like it was straight with the notch somewhere in the 2:30 to 3:00 o'clock area. Yes, the tab does extend up into the adapter that is on top of the fender. Thanks Jerry
