Rally-Pac tach

On the tach with a Rally-Pac set, does the tach pick-up like most tachs, at the coil?  I am using a MSD dist and Blaster coil in a 351W and a MSD 6A ignition box. Thanks  Retired 65

Re: Rally-Pac tach

The original rally pak tach is wired in series with the coil, kind of different than most aftermarket stuff.

Re: Rally-Pac tach

What exactly does "in series" mean? I was just in the process of reinstalling my rally pac into my 65 mustang after having installed the painless wiring kit, and decided to verify installation process for the tach. I know that they are very sensitive and I can blow the tach, so I was trying to avoid that...Ha, Ha, Ha!!! Installing the wiring kit has currently allowed me to bypass my tach, which is great because I don't ahve to worry about my car not starting if my tach goes out, but I would like to have my tach running... Please help, thank you.

Re: Rally-Pac tach

It wires inline between the ignition switch and the coil. For the stock wiring, this would be between the ignition switch and the pink resistor wire.

Re: Rally-Pac tach

Is there any way to bypass having to wire it this way and still have it work properly, or do I HAVE to wire it this way. I would like to wire it so that it does not intefere with the ability of my car turning on if the tach gets fried.... Additionally, is there any way to protect (additional in-line fuse or additional resistor somewhere) the tach from being fried? I have read multiple forums where individuals fry their tachs and I prefer not to do this; ever if possible.

Re: Rally-Pac tach

Sorry, I did not notice that you are using an MSD box. I ran a factory Rally Pac with and MSD ignition for many years without a problem. You will need a tach adaptor. Verify the part number, but I believe you need p/n 8920. You can download the wiring instructions on the MSD site. It looks like your car will continue to run under this setup even if the tach fails as it reads the current from a parallel circuit. Look at the pic and it makes more sense.
