I'm gettin' too old for this......

....bending over backward to get up under the dash.  I need to disconnect the speedo cable to be able to remove the instrument cluster so I can hook up the wires to my recently installed GT fog lites.

To be able to get my arm up around the bottom of the dash, I have to lay on my back, over the threshold  and put the back of my head on the pedals.  Then I can hardly get back out of there.

Bottom line is, even though I have done this before, I cannot find where the cable attaches to the back of the speedometer.  If I wasn't so twisted up and cramped, I could lay there longer and fish around.  Which side of the steering column is best to reach up and find the nut/cable.  I also have a console and a factory A/C.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

I find the easiest way to to pull the screws and pull the instrument panel aft until I can easily get to the speedo cable. It's a lot easier than laying on your back.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

I, too, remove the screws holding the instrument cluster.  Just be careful that the cluster does not scratch your steering column.  The speedo gear unscrews very easily.  And a pair of pliers can be used if the mount is too tight for your fingers to loosen.

Going under the dash is a royal pain.  I remove the driver's seat.  Gives that aging body much more room to move around.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

I feel your pain man, getting old suck's. Used to slide right down there and fold up into all kinds of posistions.  The only way I can do it now is remove the seats, and it still hurts but I can move.  Was going to comment on how easy it is to remove the speedo cable, but my pedal support is out of the car. I work for a couple hours then retreat to my recliner.

Here I am at 67, just the thought of crawlin under the dash of a Mustang breaks my back. How ever the idea of sharing a Mustang weekend with other folks is mighty attractive. Just goes to show what is fun fer one, aint No fun at all fer another.

I just leap frogged you, last week, by one year, Tubo.  I am pretty trim but the ol' bod does not contort and reform like it used to. In the past (memory suffers some, as well) I may have detached the speedo cable by pulling the instrument cluster out, reaching behind it and unscrewing it.  It is just hard to remember those details from 1982.

I got a kick out of 57steve's declaration that at an advanced age he would "work for a couple hours then retreat to my recliner".  That is precisely my MO these days, whatever the project.  Sometimes, depending on the job, I cannot even do a 2 hour stretch without finding something else to do that uses a seperate set of muscles and brain power.

btw, 57steve, you ought to bring your car up to the Touchmark 8th annual car show next Saturday.  It is a real nice show that is just off 164th St, a mile north of SR14, in Vancouver.  They do a real nice free lunch and the show is free.  If you are interested pm me with your email and I will forward the email with the pdf flyer in it.  I've gone the last two years and will be there this time.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

Getting old 'aint for sissies! Just crawl under there and gitter done.
At my age and physical condition I have to remove the front seats to work under the dash, it's a pain but sure makes it easier on the old bod.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

I understand completly, still actively twisting wrenches! But at 78, gittin up and down slidin under my 65 takes a pinch longer. Not enough light anymore and glasses are at wrong angle for under dash work!!! Lost an eye several years back so no depth perception! Jeez, no fun gettin old! However, urge all of you to keep trying!! Keep that body and brain workin!!!

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

So....Howard is 78, Mr Tim is 75, and BB is gonna be 70 in Aug.  Anyone else with advanced Geezertude?  I have all the same complaints plus my back and hips seem to think they are pushing 120.  Butt (TS&T), I keep at it.  This week I managed to get three side winows installed and rough adjusted.  May get to the last one later today.  Just got to keep a bit of forward motion and it will get done.

The back issue and contorting made me hire a guy to do the headliner.  I did the last one and it was okay but croutching inside the car to do one now is more than I can face.  As for the recliner...well, I can do about four or five hours, then it's inside to discuss the situation with my friend Jack.

See ya all in Sept. I hope.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

I'm 74 and getting in the trunk to change the rear shocks is a thing of the past.  The back makes getting under the car very uncomfortable.  Under dash work is now out of the question too.  I'm just about the point where changing tires is it.

Fortunately, my ride is pretty much the way I want it, so only normal maintenance is required these days.  No projects in sight right now.  What that means is my car is on the road, not up on jack stands!  I'm almost at 600,000 miles!

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

My hats off to all of you "youngsters" for still contorting to work on the cars. Stay in motion.

A guy I work with built a platform at the same elevation as the daily driver he was working on to get under the dash cause he didn't want to pull out the seat. Food for thought.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

Cool name, boomyal. I had to laugh (and it's not funny 😄) when I read, "To be able to get my arm up around the bottom of the dash, I have to lay on my back, over the threshold  and put the back of my head on the pedals.  Then I can hardly get back out of there." I know how this feels! I'll be back under there soon doing Mustang Steves clutch and brake pedal bearings. I'm not looking forward to it! I'll be 55 this year. Like most of us Mustangers is not the years, it's the miles that get us. 😀

At least you're still working on yours.  I have to say that for me the thrill is gone and it's really hard to go out and work on it.  Had a loose steering box (innerds).  Took three months to get started after putting the car on jackstands.  Took a day to get the column out and the box released from the frame and to learn that the box was not going to come out the bottom like I had hoped.  Then it sat for three weeks before I went out and pulled the engine and transmission so I can pull the steering box out (plus some time to retrieve several sockets and fasteners that dropped from above the engine straight into the little 2" hole of the exhaust pipe laying on the floor under the engine).  Add another two weeks not wanting to work on it.  Yesterday I spent an hour to install the replacement steering box and geez-knows how long it will be before it''s all back together.  I think it's going to go if I ever do get it all put back together and running again ...

I'll have to see if I can load my GIF avatar to go along with the name.  Years ago I owned a gun store in Pasadena CA.  It was a nickname given to me by a long time friend.

Looking back, when I was 55, this stuff would have still been a breeze, but 13 years later.....

I contemplated doing MS's power brake pedal conversion.  All that you describe has kept me from going there.  I have a convertible that has a cross brace under the dash and factory A/C.  I'd be a cripple if I tried to pull my brake pedal assemble out from under the dash.  I guess I will just stick with the manual disc brakes which do not work too bad.

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

Yeah BB it gets tougher every year to crawl under the car, I'm 76 and let me tell ya it only gets harder.
After 10 years of doing MCA shows we have retired the 68 from those long haul drives that culminated  with a complete detailing of the car from where the rubber meets the road to the tip of the antenna.

This past winter I completed an EPAS for the 68 but was too spent to install it, perhaps this winter I will try to summon up enough energy to get it done.  ( My wife's insistance for me to "modify" the kitchen instead of the car might have had something to do with "EPAS non install".

Re: I'm gettin' too old for this......

Since we are all comparing notes... Im 47.  With an illeostomy Ive had since age 28.   I also have psoriatic arthritis, diabetes from the extreme medicine that I was given to treat other issues that messed up my pancreas, macular edema, two herniated discs in my back and weight issues. (I take full responsibility for the last part.)  I could more to deal with that.   I just had shot #6 in the eye Friday since last years bash.

I still havent given up the dream......Its your will, not your way that gets it done.
