I'm going to start looking for parts to swap out the automatic for manual in the 66 Ranchero. I was wondering what other options I might have than a T-5. Nothing against T-5's just wondering right now. I thought the Fairlane structure may have more room underneath, which may give more options. Want something that will mate up to a Windsor. Any thoughts?

If you are going 'manual', easy option would be the OEM toploader, which will fit with no issues. The T5 is a nice upgrade, and allows for some bigger rear end gears due to 5th being an overdrive. There are other options, but these can get complex and expensive.

Walt, If you can swing it I really like the T5Z. It drives like an old close ratio 4 spd but has a .63 OD in 5th. It will fit in the tunnel, is plenty strong unless you...or Brenda...go crazy, and are not nearly as $pensive as some othre options. The fun factor would be right up there with a 3.55 or 3.73 in the hiney.
Just sayin"

How much do you want to spend? Ultimately you can put any maunual transmission in it with the right combination of adapters, modifications, and floorpan surgery.
The T5 offers reasonable price, and factory smooth shifting. They can be upgraded to handle serious power too with gears from G-Force.
Tremec offers 5 speeds designed to replace the T5. They are very tough, but shifting is notably notchy.
King of the hill is probably the T56, or one of its many iterations (Monster, etc.) which can handle stupid power, but it is a big trans, not easily fit into the tight tunnels of yesteryear. This will be the toughest, but most expensive option.

I wasn't looking for anything with major mods. Thought there might be something else out there that would kinda go in with minor mods like a T-5. Thought the 66 Fairlane may have a little more tunnel room. I do have aT-5 bell, I guess that's a start. I'll just keep my eye on Craig's list for now, but the 'Z' sounds like a good option.
Sal the LENCO may be a little much, even for Brenda!

Any T5 can be converted to a Z spec. Its just a gear kit. Cost for the kit used to be around $450, but I'm sure its gone up a bit since I last bought one. If you can rebuild the trans yourself, and its not really that hard, you can usually pick up a used T5 for $250 if you look around, mabe less if you can find one that's busted (you're replacing all the parts that commonly break, so its worth the slight risk if it turns out to have irreprable damage). The only caveat is that it must be a Ford WC T5. Typical stock OD gears are 0.68, and those aren't replaced with the Z-spec kit, but there are ones that came with the 0.63 OD. Honestly though, 0.05:1 worth of gear isn't going to make any difference in the real world. What you want is the close ratios and added strength of the Z-spec gears.

I run the weaker t5 behind a 375 horse 5.0 with explorer 373 rear in my 66 and it holds up just fine. The t5z is not much stronger for what you pay, they're all going to break just the same when they break. The z is a nice upgrade if you otherwise plan on replacing most of the gears anyhow. The gearbox has the z kit for under $500. Don't play more then $100 for a t5 needing a rebuild, or more then $350 for a good used unit

The strength gain is marginal, in fact its mostly in the first gear anyway, which rarely breaks. Typically the T5 will break 3rd gear. The benefit is the better ratios.
A lot is touted about trans strength, this trans is weak, that one is strong, blah, blah, blah. The truth is that what realyl breaks transmissions is shock loading. Its rare where you can shock load a trans enough on street tires to break it. Traction is what you need to break it, and a light, high powered car on street rubber is not a recipe for traction.

I have seen several T5's fail with street tires and a moderate HP engine due to wheel hop. If you have any wheel hop, a T5 be in jeopardy. Fix your wheel hop or avoid situations where you may get it. Mostly I see it on corner exit when the inside wheel is unloaded or on hard launch from standing start.

Also a possibility, but that's also a case of what rear you're running. The weak link alwasy goes first.
I've seen guys break T5s in stock vehicles. I've also seen stock T5s live in cars with stroker motors, a 250 shot of juice, yaking the front wheels on the launch, and running mid 10s.
Its by no means an exact science, but by and large a T5 like any other part will treat you as well as you treat it.
REMEMBER!!! When posting a question about your Mustang or other Ford on this forum, BE SURE to tell us what it is, what year, engine, etc so we have enough information to go on. |
