I'm sure this is a topic that has been covered a lot but I need opinions/advice from people who may have been there. I'm thinking about eventually stepping up the tire/wheel size on the back of my 1967 fastback. Currently running 17x8 Torqthrust M with 245/45 17. Was thinking of going to a 17x9 or 18x9 with a 275/40. Does anyone have any insight you could give me as to tire rub or other problems I may run into running this size on this car? The 17x8 has a 4.5" backspace and the 17x9 has a 5.95" backspace. Thanks

I think you'll need to stick to an 8" wheel on the front to avoid rubbing. On the rear, 5.95" backspacing may be too deep for a 9" wheel. I run a 17x9.5 on the rear of my '67 and those wheels have 5.5" backspacing. There seems to be some room on the backside, but the smaller wheel with more backspacing would move the wheel inboard and away from the quarter panel, which could cause it to hit on the inside with space to spare on the outside. If the wheels you want are only available in that configuration, and there is a fitment issue you can always reduce backspacing by running a wheel spacer. In the end I'll defer to those who may have a 17x9 with 5.95"BS on their '67, and I'm not saying outright it won't work, just giving you some points to consider.

Thanks for the reply. According to the dodgestang chart someone has done it but, like you, I believe the b.s. is wrong for my application. Unfortunately with the wheels I'm running this is the only backspace that's close to what I need that is available.

If you're ok with slightly modifying the inner wheel well, you can take out the 1/2inch to 1inch lip at the frame rail. That might be just enough for what you need.

I think a 1/2"-1" spacer woudl also solve your issue. You could mount the tires, then add stacks of washers between the wheel and mounting flange to see the effect 1/2" would have and interpolate from there if you feel you need more. This is just to check fitment mind you, obviously don't drive it like that. There are a lot of companies that make both long studs and quality wheel spacers.

Im running the 2001 Mustang rims 17x8 with 1" spacers. Im running 275-40-17 on the Rear with no issues.

275-40-17 on 17x8 on Front and back on 69 Mustang

Thanks for the input! After researching this I believe my best course of action would be to have my 17x8 wheels widened an inch. I like where the wheel and tire sit in relation to the quarter panel lip and if I have one inch added to the backside of the wheel I'll end up with the same wheel lip position, a 17x9 with 5.5" b.s., and plenty of wheel for a 275/40. I've dealt with Weldcraft Wheel in Michigan before to have some wheels narrowed and those guys do great work. I'd like to use someone local (central Indiana) but having a good experience with Weldcraft is making me lean that way. Thanks again for all your replies. And Steve, your car looks great!

You could try the 275 40 17 first and see how it fits and looks. If you dont like it then widened the rims. Thanks on my 69!
