Starters

I have a 1966 mustang Coupe with a 289 cui 4V (A) code engine with an C4 Automatic Transmission .I'm changing over to a top loader 4 speed transmission with a cast iron bell housing with a 164 tooth flywheel and an 11 inch clutch and a diaghram pressure plate . My Question is will my starter  from the Automatic C4 tranny work for my Manual tranny or will I have to get one for an Manual tranny and are the still available any help would be great Thanks Gotstang

Re: Starters

I'm not an authority on this but looking at Oriellys wab page they show starters for Auto or manual trans!  I was thinking the difference was in the depth that the nose stuck into the bell housing.

Re: Starters

In my experience I've always found that the starter for a 157 tooth manual or automatic is the same. I know some auto parts stores will tell you differently but that's what has always worked for me. If I remember correctly this is also the same starter for a 164 tooth automatic. It's the 164 tooth manual starter that is all by itself. Once again, this is if I remember correctly. Autozone will have two different starters listed for a 157 tooth application, one for manual and one for automatic. The one they list for an automatic works with a stick or auto while the one listed for a manual is for a 164 tooth stick. This has been what I've found when messing around with these. The accuracy of the preceding information is not meant as gospel and should be used as a starting point only as it's been years since I messed around with a 164 tooth flywheel. Good luck.

Re: Starters

gotstang, real easy to tell which starter you need! Measure from mounting face of bell housing to flywheel. Now measure on starter from mounting face to end of gear, should be slightly shorter measurement than the first.
About 1/8 inch or so
