Gas Fumes

Took my Mustang to work on Friday and it drove Great and was a Blast.  After parking it in the Garage
the next morning the Garage was filled with Gas Fumes.   Thats never happened before.   I did an inspection of the tank and lines and didn't see any leaks.   I checked the engine and didn't see any leaks.  There is a Gas Smell when I lifted the air cleaner off which I think is normal.   Any other Ideas?

Thanks

Re: Gas Fumes

Probably won't see any leaks;  gas evaporates really quick.    Check the rubber hose from the sending unit to the hard line.

Re: Gas Fumes

Did some more investigating and the Fuel Sender in the tank was leaking Fuel. Of course I filled the 20 gallon tank on Friday. So I drained the fuel and filled up every thing I owned that had a Fuel Tank this morning with the extra gas and installed a new rubber gasket.  The old one was twisted slightly but enough that it started leaking.  I put on a little RTV to hold the seal up on the tank.  I didn't do that last time and must of twisted the seal.  Held up for a year.   I only drained out 15 Gallons so I either got about 8 miles to the Gallon on my Friday Drive or I left a lot of Fuel on the Hwy Beltline...LOL So it was about a 2 hour job.

Re: Gas Fumes

Normal procedure is to use some bearing grease to hold the seal in place.  RTV does not like gasoline.  I know you are using the RTV to seal anything, but grease also works great and can easily be cleaned off.

Re: Gas Fumes

I just put a very small amount on of RTV at 1, 3 6 12 o clock...LOL.  I hope to never touch it again for another 20 years.  But if I do Im using Grease.

Re: Gas Fumes

I always used 'vaseline' (just enough to put a film on) for this apllicable, as well as any requiring O-Ring (or quad-ring) to slide into place, or have the mating piece slide over it.
