Anyone running a hydroboost brake booster

How do you like it,is it better than a stock booster....jj

Not a Mustang, but I swapped from the stock vacuum booster on my Jeep to a hydroboost because the stock setup couldn't stop the 35" tires. With no other changes, I felt as if I was going to go through the windshield the first time I mashed the pedal.

That said, on a lightweight Mustang with smaller tires, the MS brake booster kit works great and without all the plumbing needs. Also, make sure you have a high pressure, high volume pump if you go hydroboost. I'm not sure the specs of your booster, but the kit for my Jeep used a 1450 psi pump at 4.5 gpm.

I have installed a couple of those. The ones from 98 Mustang GT will bolt up to same bolt pattern as Fox Mustang booster, so using my 65/66 conversion plate and pin kit works to convert anything from 65-66, and it can be made to work with 67-70 pedal assemblies with some fabrication.  Versailles hydroboost should have same bolt pattern as the Fox, but have not tried that one.

I never drove the car it was to be installed on - just built up the pedal assembly and hydroboost.  So, no evaluation as to performance.


Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

My dilemma stems from low engine vacuum,a big cammed, bored and stroked Cleveland  only 7-8 inches of vacuum...I am using an electric vacuum pump now but it's just ok,I'm pretty sure I'll be switching to a hydroboost...Currently, 70 Mach 1 Bendix booster,  Summit electric vacuum pump........jj

I have two vehicles with the hydro boost. I like the vacuum boost pedal feel a lot better. The hydro units both have a fair amount more pedal travel and less feedback feel. With the advent of electric power steering, I would keep the vacuum if possible. If your cam is too much for the vacuum the hydro is a choice. I would probably opt for an electric vacuum pump that only runs for a little once in a while instead of the constant horsepower drain of the steering pump and go electric steering.

You may need a vacuum tank in addition to the pump.  I've been messing with Diesels the past couple years and they make no vacuum (no throttle plate in the engine), so they run hydroboost for the brakes and a vacuum pump and reservoir for HVAC controls, autolocking hubs, etc.

The hydroboost works great on these trucks, but you're also talking about something that tips the scales at 8,000lbs. 

I agree that if you can make the vacuum system work its a better choice in a light car like a Mustang.  Typically when hydroboost is used on a car its due to clearance issues that prevent using a vacuum booster.

Using 8' dual diaphram booster and Modern Driveline LF clutch linkage with a 428 FE in my 68 mustang. No clearance issues, I am using a vacuum pump with 4 wheel Wilwoods cause my cam is 642/ 631. 110 LSA. No Problems.

Trying to run manifold vacuum to get say 8" and then step it up with a vacuum pump would require a more complex system to really work.  You would need at the least a check valve to keep the vacuum pump from pumping vacuum back into the engine, and running all the time.  I think you'd need a reservoir with that system too, so it begs the question why not just run the pump and reservoir?  I don't think you gain anything by continuing to tap off manifold vacuum when its too low for your needs.

I once read about one was having an electric vacuum pump and vacuum tank, that he didn't like the noise of the pump. When waiting for a traffic light and keeping his foot on the brake,  the vacuum pump made such a noise that people were looking at the car, not because of the V8 sound, but the noise of the electric pump rises above the V8 sound.
Are there other vacuum pumps than the electric one. Maybe one driven by a belt?

I would discount that.  I've heard the one in my Diesel run and by itself it makes little noise.  You certainly can't hear it over an engine.
