squeeking speedo cable

I took my 67 coupe out for about a 50 mile road trip. It hasn't been out much this year.  On the return trip i developed a loud squeeking inside the car so I'm assuming it is the speedo cable or speedo it self.  The cable was replaced a few years ago but car has been sitting for awhile.

Looking for tips on how to lubricate the cable and or speedo?  I was thinking pulling the instrument panel out a bit, unhook the cable and shoot some white lithium grease down in the cable and maybe a bit in the back of the speedo where the cable attaches.  Any suggestiong appreciated,

Re: squeeking speedo cable

Not sure of the right way to do this but I can tell how to avoid doing it wrong. Don't use a viscous grease whatever you do as it will make the cable drag.

Also, be sure the cable has smooth bends with no kinks or clamps that are crushing it.

I would think pull the inner cable and coat it with really lightweight lube would be the cure.

Money you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted money... unless your wife finds out.

Re: squeeking speedo cable

X2 what Boom said.  If you've never used it before, be verrrry careful.  It is a very light oil with very fine graphite particles in it.  It is really easy to drip some of it where it should not go, and then it's hard to clean up.  If you pull the cable out to lube it, put a beach towel on the seat cushion and floor to keep from getting it where you don't want it.
Enjoy

Re: squeeking speedo cable

Not sure if EPA has out lawed or what, but over 25 yrs ago they sold little tubes of dry graphite. This was used for speedo cables and lock mechnisms for doors and ignitions.  If you can find some, It worked great.  I think they still sell it, but not sure? This is a powder type lubricant, not liquid based.
